A girl and her hammer
As a child I would spend countless hours scouring over my mothers Encyclopedia of Crafts learning about different art forms, dreaming about the day I would become a famous artist. I have always had the need to create, an urge or calling if you will, but I could never find the right outlet. During my younger years I fumbled through various art classes; drawing, water paints, whatever I could get my hands on. As an adult I picked up a guitar and dappled in some singing and songwriting. It wasn’t until I received an anvil and chasing hammer from my sister did I learn my true calling.
Striking the hammer to the copper brought me back to the first time I ever saw a blacksmith at work. I was about 12 years old and on a trip to the gold country in Northern California with my family. It was like walking into the past. There was gold panning, a saloon, woman in turn of the century dresses, sarsaparilla, and right in the center of town a real life blacksmith. His muscles glistened with sweat as he moved between the forge and the enormous anvil, working on a horseshoe he would later turn into a candle holder. I remember thinking to myself that one day I wanted to be a blacksmith. I wanted to create not only art, but functional art. I never thought that dream could become true until I found Etsy.
I started making metal hair forks back in the spring of 2009 under a business I shared with my sister Dawn. We named our business and Etsy shop MairzyDozy after the song our mother used to sing to us as children called ‘Mairzy Dotes and Dozy Dotes’ (our family loves to sing). One day while working on some new jewelry concepts for the business, my plastic hair fork broke as I was attempting to pull my hair back. After a few moments of frustration I looked down at the copper wire I was working with and wondered if I could reproduce the broken fork. After many failed attempts I created a successful working design and I decided to list one in our etsy shop. Soon after, I received a custom request from a lady with hair below her waist in need of a 6” hair fork. She loved it, told some friends, and from there our business blossomed. I have made and sold over 2000 hair forks and sticks that can be found all over the world!
After 4 wonderful years, Dawn and I decided that we would better meet our personal and business goals by creating individual businesses. So began the birth of Tempest Moon Studio.
In addition to running Tempest Moon Studio, I work full time at a local insurance agency in customer service. I have been in the customer service industry for 20 years and have worked with the same insurance agent for 11 of those years.
I enjoy spending time with my husband watching movies, reading books to each other, and playing different MMORPG's. I love hearing my daughter strum clumsily on my guitar with her sweet voice echoing in the room. And the best way for me to unwind from my busy day is to scratch behind the ear of my very own luck dragon “Falkora”.
