A cycle of healing through fiber art

I discovered fiber art through a weaving workshop offered through a tech job that had been beating me to a pulp. The burnout, casual racism, and sexism, and the “what deal with when you’re trying to do good at scale” was crushing me.

I dove headfirst into fiber to cope. There, I rediscovered myself and my inner wisdom. I realized I had to step back from the grind altogether. I went all in on art, and it healed me.

I started a business making things for others because I wanted to help heal them too. My art is beautiful, but the commission *process* is REALLY special. “It’s like if Queer Eye had an artist,” said one client. I was having deep, sticky conversations with surprising clarity on the other side, then creating designs to commemorate and celebrate what we’d learned. Where I heard chaos, I designed a grounding reminder that order is revealed, not imposed. For a non–stop globe trekker, permission to celebrate the rare triumph of Black bodies resting.

My once forgotten degrees in psychology and studio art played so well together, it felt like coming home.

I use knitting, weaving and other more delicate methods of manipulation to create fiber art. I luxuriate in the inviting texture and precious nature of the fiber, all the while meditating on the awesome ecosystem of hands that brought it to my studio: an animal is hand shorn, fiber is hand dyed in small batches; some handspun, others hand felted.

I generally work with natural fibers: wool, silk, cotton, mohair, jute, and raffia. Since most of my pieces are custom, I create them on wooden looms I’ve made myself, or freestanding from a simple wooden dowel. Custom work also mean custom dyes and blends on stainless steel and chestnut combs

I create art to make space to explore our inner wisdom and what truths lie in our stillness. In my work, I consider the pricelessness of agency in a world overridden with despair. I contemplate our relationships to work, and how we might redefine them. I assert the possibility of clarity, freedom, humor, and joy. And as a disabled queer Black woman, I assert the audacity to claim these for myself.

Piece by beautiful custom piece, I’ve found myself having deeper and more meaningful impact than I’d ever had when chasing scale through technology. I may not be called to solve problems on that global scale, but all we can do is what we can do, and I’m pleased to be doing what I can.

I studied art all my life, then forgot it to become a proper adult with a proper corporate job. I returned to art to heal from the ruinous nature of that world, and I create for others to help them celebrate, reflect and heal as well.
