Vintage apron worn by a "Make Do" dress form--vintage laundry hamper stuffed with newspaper.
At market, selling the cutes. I spy THREE Etsy listings in this display--don't let them go away!

"Make do" means to make use of what's in front of you, to do without, to make ends meet, to be resourceful, to create something out of nothing (or very little). It is a philosophy I try to live by for the sake of creativity, originality, frugality, and good stewardship of what we've been given. It is the philosophy behind quilting; stitching together scraps of cloth that would otherwise be thrown away to become something new, beautiful, warm, and strong. It can be applied to home decorating, throwing a party, cooking, growing a garden, putting together an outfit, making a card, organizing a pantry, nurturing a relationship--in any task where you are willing to be creative and flexible. It's letting things be perfectly imperfect. It's accepting things as they are and making the best of them. It's being grateful for what you have instead of wishing for something else. It's working to make all things both beautiful and functional.

You will see from the collection on MakeDoWares that I have a bent toward mid-century American home goods with quirky details and a story, no doubt, to tell. I like objects that make a home feel warm and lived-in and that might just as easily be a daily-used utensil as an art piece. I hunt and gather from thrift stores, yard sales, estate sales, sidewalks, dumpsters, free piles, abandoned homes (I'm going to get myself in trouble), all ends of the earth. I sift through the rubbish and emerge with things of value, beauty, and character; things that might otherwise be lost. I present them to you here and want you fill your home with them. Whether you, too, are a collector/hunter/gatherer of useful, pretty things, or are simply drawn to this style and don't have the time, energy, or eye for pursuing the chase, I hope you enjoy what I've found.

Additional policies and FAQs
Many Make Do Wares are vintage and one-of-a-kind, meaning that only one of the listed item is available through this shop. All items are either for sale in various physical markets or in storage. For this reason, there is a possibility (though it has not occurred!) that on the same day an item is purchased on Etsy, it has been sold in person and is no longer available, or is found to be damaged or otherwise compromised and no longer matches the quality and description listed.

We do everything we can to ensure this does not happen to our Etsy customers by taking loving care of our items and using the mobile app to remove sold and unavailable items from the listings, but there is chance that we would not be able to catch it in time. I so wish I could recreate these beauties for everyone, including myself!

Should this unfortunate incident occur, we would extend our heartfelt apologies to you, provide you with a full refund, help you find an item similar to the one you requested (even if it's not through our shop!), and invite you to continue following Make Do Wares for future treasure hunting.

Thank you for shopping small, independent, and repurposed! We couldn't do what we love without you.
