At 33, I'm embracing life while living with metastatic breast cancer. Creating malas has become a comforting harbor for me in this journey, enabling me to share love with others. My passion for beads ignited in 2018, amidst my treatment when the cancer spread to my right ilium bone. Immersed in a beading class, I found a calm refuge in creating something beautifully imperfect. The joy that others find in my creations leaves me humbled and filled with gratitude.

A mala, historically rooted in the spiritual traditions of Buddhism and Hinduism, acts as a meditative instrument to enhance awareness and focus. Originating thousands of years ago in ancient India, it has long been used as a tactile guide in prayer and meditation practices.

Constructed with 108 individual beads, a single guru bead signifying the wisdom of a spiritual teacher, and a tassel that brings unity, the mala is more than a simple tool. It's a bridge to higher consciousness, a symbol of a timeless spiritual journey.

In terms of utilizing your mala, it's commonly employed in meditation through the repetition of a specific mantra or intention. This practice involves echoing your chosen words internally or audibly whilst progressing along each bead with your thumb and index finger. You cycle through this process 108 times until reaching the guru bead. At this point, you reverse the direction to recommence the cycle. Apart from meditation, a mala can also serve as a tangible reminder of your intention or mantra, consistently nudging your awareness towards a state of mindfulness.
