About

My Hobby and Passion turned into a Business.

Hello, my name is Thomas Hess and I have been handcrafting walking sticks and canes for the past 18 years. As a child, I have always enjoyed exploring the forests and finding unique sticks to hike with. I joined the Boy Scouts of America and was a member for 8 years. As a Boy Scout, I learned Woodworking and Forestry and enjoyed it very much and found my passion of exploring the forest and finding unique walking sticks. In the year 2000, I met an older gentleman at a flea market in Michigan and he handcrafted and sold Walking Sticks. His booth was next to mine, and he talked about his hobby and his success in selling them. I shared that I enjoy hiking in the forest and finding unique walking sticks. He replied, carving walking sticks is a great way to pass the time while you are selling merchandise at flea markets. People will stop and ask what you are doing, watch you work, and sometimes buy a walking stick or something else you are selling. I said, you know what, this sounds like a great idea and I will give it try. I was getting bored and frustrated at the markets and this would give me something to do. So, I started carving walking sticks at the flea markets and people would stop and pick up a walking stick and start talking about them! My sales increased and it was more enjoyable. Over the years, my sales of walking sticks and canes increased and became my best selling item. I started doing festivals and living history events and pioneer reenactments with success. I learned about Etsy and joined in the year 2012. My business has been very successful and I enjoy it very much. All I remember about the gentleman that inspired me to begin my walking stick business is that his name was John and I have not seen him since that day we met at the flea market 18 years ago. It would be nice to see him again to thank him for his inspiration.
