Manoa Road, my story / Fresh from the Islands
Manoa Road came to life in 2006 after my husband and I made the big decision of leaving the islands for a fresh start. My professional life as a paralegal soon became the professional life of a stay-at-home mom; and we were a bit homesick for Hawaii. The moniker "Manoa Road" was, in all honesty, an homage to a glorious pipe dream - a little piece of paradise on O'ahu where we wanted to buy a home, settle down, and age to our twilight years.
I have always been a creative person. My affinity for tools and using my hands came from my Dad, who is a carpenter by trade. I have no brothers, so my sister and I were always Dad's helpers. (In retrospect, I suppose it was a blessing in disguise, because we most definitely did not appreciate it at the time. Heh heh.)
After college (in the mid-90s), wirework and beads became a passion because I loved being able to design and make my own jewelry to wear. It initially started out with stringing beads; but the moment I picked up a set of round nose and chain nose pliers at a local bead shop, something just clicked. With lots (and lots!) of practice, I taught myself different wirework techniques. At the law firm I worked at, I would show up to work with a new pair of earrings I had made that morning before coming in, and my co-worker would always jest, "So what did we make this morning?"
Throughout the years, I picked up more tools and more techniques like kumihimo, crochet, beadweaving, and knitting, incorporating metal and beads with fibers and learning new things along the way. I also learned how to handstamp, saw, and solder metal, which you can see with my newer offerings in the shop.
"Hey, the packaging is special too!"
"Manoa" loosely means "vast" in Hawaiian. When you buy from Manoa Road it isn't just jewelry you're getting, it's the experience of the whole package. I take great care not only in making each piece, but I also make the packaging it's in: from the sewn white felt pouch, to the card inserts, the stamped green ribbon, down to the carefully crafted envelope and liners. It is my hope that when you receive your jewelry, it's like getting a fabulous gift from a good friend.
I guess being a one-woman operation allows me to be involved in the entire process of production; or, I'm a Type-A personality. It is also my hope you get to reuse the packaging if the need arises. That would make my heart happy -- and Mother Earth too.
So, after almost 10 years of being away from Hawaii, my family and I found our way back to the islands. Everything I offer in my Etsy shop is now proudly "Handmade in Hawaii." But socio-economic commentary aside, Manoa Road still remains a glorious pipe dream that I hope you will enjoy sharing with me.

* If I notice a discrepancy in shipping addresses (because I am usually OCD about stuff like this) a number of reasonable attempts will be made to contact you via e-mail.
