Item was shipped in time. It was nicely wrapped. I did not unwrap it because it was a gift and was added to a box of related items. The gift recipient loved the pencils.

japanese paper goods + jewelry

my great grandmother always insisted that my family had japanese in our blood. while this may or may not be the case, she certainly was an avid appreciator of japanese culture. it seems that when i, her first great granddaughter, was born, she passed along her great love of all things japanese to me, along with her reddish hair and quirky mannerisms. i accepted these things graciously, and throughout my twenty-something years, japanese influence has steeped, like a fine tea, into every facet of my life.

my great grandmother, the inspiration and foundation for who i am today, passed away some time ago, but with my brand of creations, she lives on. ‘maoiliosa’ is not a japanese name – in fact, it is irish, like many of my great grandmother’s and my ancestors, and ‘maoiliosa’ is the irish gaelic equivalent to my american name: melissa. in my life and through each maoiliosa piece, i seek to metamorphose something into japanese which previously wasn’t, as well as employ the japanese phenomenon of 'zakka' - the art of seeing the savvy in the ordinary and mundane.

maoiliosa began as a japanese jewelry line in 2008, and has since been expanded, keeping my background as a writer in mind, to include mini and full-sized pencils, notecard sets, and notebooks, all skillfully handcrafted by me in my home studio from my extensive collection of exquisite japanese washi (chiyogami, yuzen, and katazome) papers. i feel extremely fortunate that i have been doing what i love for a living for the past 5 years. most of all, i love making things with my own two hands that people will adore having and giving.

arigatou gozaimashita (thank you), and enjoy!

hi there! i hope you enjoy your shopping experience at maoiliosa :).

what is washi, exactly? 'washi' is the japanese word for paper, but specifically, washi means japanese paper. this paper is made in japan by skilled artisans using tree and plant pulp and fibers. no harmful chemicals are used in making washi paper. the paper, once constructed (see youtube for some interesting videos on how washi paper is made), is then silk-screened (or stenciled, if it's katazome washi) by hand to make the stunning images that i use in my collection. washi is known for being a very sturdy, yet versatile paper, and it's even sometimes used to make kimono. i'm in love with the stuff, and have a collection of over 100 different patterns!

Returns and exchanges
if after extensive communication with you, we find there is a fault in your purchased items that prevent you from enjoying them the way in which they are intended, i will refund your purchase minus the cost of shipping or replace the item. however, i spend a lot of time making sure each piece is a quality product, and i do everything i can to make sure each piece is accurately represented in the description and photos, so rest assured: your items will last for years and years and will be the item you saw when you ordered. you have 7 days after you receive your order to get in touch with me about a refund/exchange/fix. this return policy applies to everything except clearance items, custom orders, and wholesale orders.

i cannot accept returns or exchanges on sale or clearance items, custom orders, or wholesale orders.
i accept payments through both direct checkout and through paypal for your convenience. please note that if you pay through paypal with an e-check, your payment will take 3-5 days to process, and your order will not be sent out until the payment has cleared.

i do not charge you sales tax (normally, i would have to charge texas customers only). instead, i pay the taxes out of my own pocket. this way, the price you see on etsy is the price you pay - no "surprises"!
your entire order ships for one low rate. shopping should be fun and hassle-free, after all! all orders are shipped using the u.s. postal service at first class unless we make other arrangements for priority or express shipping. if you do need priority or express shipping, no problem! just let me know so i can adjust your paypal bill.

your items are always carefully packaged to ensure a safe arrival to their new home. unless you inform me that you're in a hurry to receive your items, i usually mail orders out twice per week.

as per mail regulations, i include a customs form on every international package with the accurate order information. i cannot be held responsible for package hold-ups in customs - once the postal service accepts your package when i ship it, it is, unfortunately, out of my hands. please do let me know if you have any issues receiving your order.
Additional policies and FAQs
yes, i do wholesale! please contact me for more info if you'd like to sell maoiliosa items in your online or brick-and-mortar shop.

environment - to ease your allergy concerns, all of my items come from a smoke free studio. i use eco-friendly products whenever possible: my bubble mailers are recyclable and made from 100% recycled fiber (for the actual envelope) and 20% recycled film (for the bubble wrap), my gift boxes are made from 95% recycled materials, my packing peanuts are biodegradable and made from 100% recycled content, my sealer is nontoxic and acid-free, and of course washi paper is very earth-friendly, as well, as it is created with no toxic chemicals and is silkscreened/dyed by hand.

sealer - i use nontoxic (safe for the environment), waterbased, matte and glossy sealers on my washi products so that each piece is protected. this sealer makes my pieces water-resistant, but not fully water-proof, but why would you want to dunk your pretty jewelry in water, anyway? ;).

tarnish - because maoiliosa jewelry items are made with silver, they may tarnish with time due to contact with the air. to prevent this, be sure to properly store your jewelry. if you do notice the silver on your jewelry is tarnishing, you can purchase little polishing cloths at many stores (and even here on etsy) with which to gently rub on the silver to remove the tarnish. if the tarnish is extensive, a simpler remedy is to purchase some silver tarnish remover, dip the silver part of your jewelry in the cleaner for just a second or two, remove, and rinse the cleaner-soaked silver with warm water. taking these steps will ensure that your 'maoiliosa' jewelry stays bright and beautiful!

safety - most of my items contain small pieces and should not be given to/left around pets, as they could be a choking hazard. my items are not recommended for children under 5 years old or any child prone to sticking foreign objects in their mouth, as they might accidentally choke.

feedback - i love leaving my customers feedback, and usually do so within a day of shipping your order. i would love feedback from you, as well! please contact me before leaving anything but positive feedback so we can work out any problems. i want you to be extremely satisfied!

to help limit the impact on the environment, i don't include a paper receipt with your package. if you log in to your etsy account and go to 'your etsy', then 'purchases', however, you can see everything you've bought from this fantastic site, including items from me :), and you can print from there if you so choose.

again, please feel free to convo/email me if you have any questions or comments. i want you to be absolutely thrilled with your purchase!
