About

Presenting the Spirit of Time, Place and Memory through Photography

After many years of using photography in my architecture work, I realized that my primary interest was not in designing buildings, but in discovering how I could use photography to represent the spirit of place, time, and memory.

What took me so long?

I studied architecture as an undergraduate at Harvard and then went on to earn a Masters of Architecture from Berkeley. I was pretty sure I was supposed to do something with that experience. I did work in the field for several years, but I also did a number of other things, like home school our oldest son and write stories for children. All the while, though, photography remained a constant element in my life.

If photography was so important, what was I going to do about it? Through the encouragement of friends, I had my first gallery shows. I published some of my photos in architectural books and journals. I also taught courses to architecture students on how to use photography to explore the nature of built space. My work has been exhibited in galleries in Berkeley and Albuquerque as well as at the Universities of New Mexico and Notre Dame. It is also in private collections in the United States, New Zealand, Greece and Turkey.

In 2008, I opened my Etsy shop. I offered greeting cards and limited edition prints. I have also been participating in local arts and crafts fairs where I enjoy discussing photography with fair-goers. I also value the camaraderie and advice of other arts and crafts people.

Fast forward to September 2018, my Etsy shop reopens! Filled with accessible art pieces that offer a secret window into the world I photograph.

Thank you so much for stopping by.

Welcome!
In looking at my artwork, you may find it reminiscent of photography from the late 1800s/early 1900s. My color palette ranges from sepia-tone with subtle colors to more intensely brilliant colors. I give my images a distinct visual patina reminiscent of the materials of their subject matter and this contributes to their aged appearance.

My intention in processing each image is to recreate the memory that the subject impressed upon me. I focus on subjects that move me in some way, trying to capture not only depth, color and texture, but also the more elusive sense of being in a place with its own power to inspire. In developing my images, I try hard to bring out those qualities in order to evoke the power of place I sensed when taking the photograph.

Whether you call it power, spirit or sense of place, I hope that my pieces will open a window onto a world filled with stories and secret places to explore.

Additional policies and FAQs
I produce all my work using only archival, museum grade materials. With proper care, they will last for generations.

When viewing images in the catalog, bear in mind that your computer display render colors differently.

Prints
I insist on furnishing all prints with 100 percent cotton museum board mats and backing. I hinge-mount the prints to the backing, which is itself hinged to the front mat. Title, signature, and date, in pencil, are below each image and visible through the mat opening. In the case of pearlescent or glossy papers, the signature details will be in ink.

All prints come with a signed Certificate of Authenticity that provides detailed information about the print, its materials, and its care.

Cards (when they become available)
I create my cards using only acid-free materials. Title, signature, and date are penciled below each image.

Prints, matted prints, and cards come in sealed archival polypropylene sleeves.

Reserved Items
Custom orders will be listed as RESERVED in your name for a period of 7 days. If you still desire the item after that time, please contact me.
