About

M. Shields

Born and raised next to the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, I grew up surrounded by woods, water, and nature’s creatures. From my father, I received an abiding respect for excellence in one’s craft: from my mother, a deep appreciation of beauty. My parents got me into drawing lessons early on, but I don’t remember wanting to be an artist professionally until I was 20 and dissatisfied with school. I took a summer job at Colonial Williamsburg and stayed on for the next 11 years. There I was privileged to be apprenticed to William de Matteo, one of America’s leading silversmiths of the 20th century. He took on only 4 apprentices during his lifetime: I am honored to have been one of them. At Colonial Williamsburg, we produced big, beautiful handmade silver vessels, both 18th Century designs and contemporary. I started my own studio in 1980 and am grateful to be doing something I love all these years. In 1989, I began a collection of pins that has grown to over 100 full production designs along with many styles of earrings to complement. This line is made of pewter and bronze, treated with oxides, plating, and special brush techniques.I am passionate about my art and craft and I celebrate the beauty and mystery of all God’s creatures.

Jennifer is an apprentice striving to become a Silversmith that I hired in 2014 to train. Here is a small bit of information on her so that you can get to know her too.

She shares the same love of animals and nature. Jennifer studied Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing at Radford University. She is born and raised in VA Beach, her love of animals influencing her art since she was young. She has always been fascinated with making art; drawing or making jewelry. Her jewelry started out like most with simple beading designs, as she grew older and more practiced her designs became more intricate, moving from beading to wire working. When Jennifer learned that there was a college program for Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing she jumped at the chance to learn even more and got into the program.

After a few months of training with me on how I make my pin/pendants, ornaments, and silver pieces I started to let her do more of the work. The last few years she has been the one to make the yearly ornaments. The 2015 Whales had been done by both of us to teach her wax carving and the intricacies of building the ornaments. She pays close attention to detail in the work that she does, ensuring that the piece is beautiful and ready for someone to have in their collection.

She has been working with me since May of 2014. I have taught her about pewter and how I make my pin and ornaments. She has brought her own unique flare to the studio in the craft in making the ornaments while keeping the liveliness of the animals we create. She has since taken over the shop.
