BIO.

Marta Spendowska is Polish, US-based artist and illustrator who moves smoothly between fine art and commercial art (illustration, licensing). She’s been working with collectors, fashion and beauty brands, ad agencies and magazines since she arrived in US. Just recently she’s been published in Oprah Magazine (July 2014), chosen as a finalist in the Richeson 75 International Art Competitions — Figure / Portrait and accepted to the 2014 WOMA museum exhibition. She’s now been represented by a leading international illustration agency Illustration Ltd with offices in London, New York, Hamburg, Paris and Shanghai.

The Life.
Marta was born in Poland during communistic times, in a small and a very old town called Jawor. She’s been drawing all her life (her father is an amateur painter) but never saw a possibility in pursuing any artistic career in a troubled and poor Poland.

As a student (she studied Journalism and Marketing and graduated with Masters from The University of Lodz, Poland) she found a way to come to US for a 5 month internship and while there and instead of learning the corporate world, she took her time to explore US and possibilities for being a working artists instead. After going back to Poland, graduating and then seeing no future in conforming to the “regular” way of leaving in Poland she decided to take a risk and bough a ticket to US. Very quickly she graduated here with a degree in design and started working with ad agencies within design and illustration area. In 2010 she decided to start her own independent journey and she’s been working independently as an artist ever since.

“My journey starts in Poland, when there was no sugar, no bananas and no freedom to walk after 10pm. It continues in US, where I sold my fist original painting, for twenty bucks, in 2002, sitting on a pavement in Little Points district, in Atlanta Georgia, during my internship. I’m thankful for this country to allow me to do what I love for living.”

The Memory.
Color, rhythm, pattern and a lyrical atmosphere is my focus now. Living in America gave me an interesting distance to Poland and it’s cold, silver-gray, melancholic nature. At this point I’m not sure what’s more influencing : the heavy, serious and emotionally gloomy but beautiful Poland or the joyful, naive America.

My abstract flora merges my love for lyrical and poetic past and mother country with my ever-present affection for color, uplift, cheer and optimism that is very American to me.
Abstract flora and botanicals reflect what’s delicate in me, what tends to be the most receptive and what would never be expressed back home.

In my landscapes I travel back to rural Poland and rural lands of Wisconsin which remind me of my childhood land that my beekeeper grandpa owned. The sentiment for dusk, fog and loneliness is always much more interesting than an orchestrated polished city.

But the most important, the Polish sea, Bałtyk… it is like no other in the whole world. Foamy, capriciously hot or cold, violet-gray and sentimental. It smells like the sea should smell: iodine plus warm sun. This is my most beloved place in the whole world. The imperfections, its raw force is truly what influences my very fluid and nostalgic work. The movement of the paint, the impulse of taking a chance on paper or canvas, fast, loosely, with no plan — like when I hopped on the plane with a one way ticket to a promised land.
