Functional and Sculptural Pottery and Art by Martha Giotes

My designs are inspired by the beauty of nature and life around me. I love variations of patterns and color and enjoy experimenting with new ideas. It’s the “ What if “ factor that inspires each piece. No two pieces are exactly alike, not only due to the unique variations in the glazes and the inherent  characteristics  of   the different stoneware and porcelain clays being used, but of my need to change each design slightly.

I was introduced to ceramics after deciding to take a class in hand building at the Fire Arts Center. Here the supportive and creative atmosphere continue to inspire me. I had been retired from a long career as a Registered Nurse at U.C. Davis Medical Center and found I needed a creative  avenue. Having always enjoyed oil painting I am now  able to transfer that love to another medium. Applying glazes does present different challenges, but there is a level of excitement to the surprise of every kiln firing.

It is very satisfying to watch something develop from a lump of clay. The artistic potential that clay provides keeps me both inspired and motivated. All of my pottery pieces are hand sculpted or wheel thrown porcelain or stoneware which I glaze and then kiln fire.
I hope you enjoy them.
