My story began with my family: Mom, Dad, my beautiful sisters, and my grandparents - especially my grandmothers, Mary and Geneva...

Ever since I was a little girl growing up in a family with very little financial resources (that means we were pretty poor) my Mom and Dad instilled the entrepeneurial spirit into me and my two sisters. Mom stayed at home with us and so we were always finding creative ways to make money from home; growing and selling tomatoes (which I hated with a passion back then, but love today. who knew?!), mowing lawns for neighbors, "walking" beans (translation for all of you city folk > pulling weeds out the bean fields), and baking / decorating custom cakes. Growing up in that environment has created in me a deep desire to run my own business.

The idea of opening my own shop on Etsy came up when I was considering getting my MBA. The dilemma: SPEND money learning? or EARN money learning? that's how I made my decision. I have already learned a great deal, just getting everything set up!

Next, what type of business would this be? Well, I am working full-time and needed something flexible that also doesn't cost much money to start because we have 3 kids to help through college. I wanted a creative outlet and realized that with all of the knitting I had been doing, little projects were starting to pile up around the house. I also have a passion for making hand-crafted gifts for friends and family. My other happy places, besides at home knitting, are thrift shops and garage sales. I live for that feeling of finding a perfect gem that someone else has loved - vintage, rustic, sometimes worn and chippy - especially one that reminds me of my grandparents Which leads into the next question...

What would I name my business? The name, Mary & Geneva, comes from my grandmothers who taught me so much about, well, everything. Cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, cleaning (actually, that one didn't stick- ugh, hate cleaning), serving others, and overall being classy (maybe I should have paid more attention on that one too). My grandmothers were two very different people, but both wonderful examples of strong, beautiful, caring women. Both of them have passed away in the last few years, and I miss them terribly. This name, and this business, are my tribute to them.
