    About

Sewing a legacy one stitch at a time.

I like to sew. I mean, I really, REALLY like to sew - always have. I was hooked at age 5 when my grandmother helped me make a dress for my doll.

Everyday life on the High Plains inspires me the most. My best designs and ideas seem to be those that I crafted to solve a problem or make my life easier.

The pioneer women who came here to Western Kansas inspire me the most. I personally know women who lived through the dust bowl days of the 1930s. Spending time with these women and listening to their stories of life on the farm, how they worked in the fields and drove tractors along side their husbands, and how they built a home and a living from whatever was around, provoke in me a desire to be such a woman.

Sewing with recycled fabrics just seems like the natural thing to do. That first doll dress that I made at age 5? It was sewn with recycled fabric from the scrap drawer that so many women of that generation kept - they couldn't just throw away something that had another use!

Mary Zoom Handmade exists to pass on the legacy of the pioneer woman from one generation to another.

Thank you for shopping Mary Zoom on Etsy. I do appreciate your business. Mary Zoom is my way of earning money through sustainable practices. I rescue t-shirts that are often headed to the landfill due to staining or rips, cut them apart and sew the useful pieces into cuffs and tattoo covers. I then package them for shipping in orphan paper envelopes purchased by me from the local thrift shop.
