About

Matangi Earth Textiles. Celebrating the female form & the wild palette of nature

I began this collection of plant-dyed clothing, accessories and textile art in 2016. Everything in my shop is made by hand with traditional methods of plant-based textile dyeing. As a response to fast fashion and the throwaway culture of modern society, I have been compelled to work with fine textiles, building colour slowly and naturally and constructing quality designs that you will want to love and keep forever. It's the goal with Matangi to create another ethos within the world of fashion that slows down the process of creation, employs local & skilled artisans, creating timeless clothing of enduring quality. My studio is on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada in the small mountain town of Britannia Beach, approximately 45 mins north of Vancouver.
The natural dye process is a very laborious but rewarding one. I work with a variety of raw plant matter from madder root, marigold flowers, pomegranate husks, logwood chips and natural indigo to name a few. I only choose dyestuffs and plant extracts that have a proven track record of colorfastness and lightfastness, meaning that they are permanent and stand up to sun exposure and washing. Often one dress has been in numerous dye baths to build up visual interest and depth within the colour field. All patterning on the cloth is performed using traditional Japanese techniques of shibori and itijame. In layman's terms, I stop the dye from penetrating the fabric in certain areas by folding and clamping shapes, tyeing and binding portions of the cloth or hand stitching my designs and pulling the threads tightly. The designs are planned yet all have an element of chance and magic. The finished product shows the hands that manipulated it and the waters and pigments that it has swam through. Truly alchemical. Each piece is one of a kind.
