About

Labor of Love

There's nothing special about my shop's story. I'm an antiques dealer/collector who's accumulated a LOT of stuff, and unfortunately I can't keep it all. I spend a great deal of time and energy hunting for things that I like, and that I think other people will like, too. I spend even more time and energy getting these things ready for sale - that means just a simple cleaning for china and glass, but for clothing, linens, and lace, that means days or weeks of soaking and hand-washing and rinsing. Then come the repairs - most vintage clothing needs some work, and the older the clothing, the more work is usually needed (I'd say only about 10% of vintage clothing doesn't need some kind of repair). Why do I do it? I LOVE this stuff and I want to preserve it for future generations. I can't think of any job I'd rather do.

Welcome to Mathilda's Attic! I like to think that the things that I sell were special to someone, that they had a previous life, and that I'm giving them new life by offering them for sale to folks who appreciate them as much as I do. I hope that in my shop you'll find what you want, what you need, and what you love. Best wishes to all - Michele

Payment
PLEASE DON'T ASK ME TO RESERVE ITEMS! I simply can't hold merchandise until you can afford to pay for it. If you see items in my shop that are reserved, it's for another reason, such as combining shipping or a price change.

I ACCEPT ONLY PAYPAL. Sorry, but I no longer accept checks or money orders.
Shipping
Shipping charges include tracking on most U.S. orders and insurance on most orders over $50.00. I'm happy to combine shipping charges whenever possible. Contact me before you buy if you feel that the combined shipping charges seem out of line - I can package and weigh your items and give you an accurate shipping quote. Also, if you need a shipping upgrade (to Priority from Standard, for example), contact me before you purchase so I can change the listing for you.

I'm sorry, but I do not ship to China, Indonesia, or Africa.

FOR INTERNATIONAL BUYERS:
Please understand that I will only fill out customs forms with accurate information, and you'll be responsible for any duties or taxes. It's your responsibility to find out what charges your government may apply.

It's also your responsibility to be aware of any restrictions/regulations regarding the importation of any item you purchase, including, but not limited to, furs, precious metals, coral, clothing, etc. I will not be responsible for items confiscated by your government.
Refunds and Exchanges
I want you to be happy with your purchase, so I do accept returns, provided that: 1) You contact me immediately upon receipt of the item (in other words, within 1-2 days). 2) You put the item in the mail within 1 week. 3) The item is returned in the same condition in which it was sent, with the original packaging. Shipping charges will not be refunded unless the item is not as I described it (e.g. undisclosed damage or inaccurate description). I do strive for complete accuracy in my descriptions (and try to research items I'm not sure about), but no one can be an expert on everything, so I'm happy to accept returns if you're not satisfied. Contact me before returning an item, and I'll try to resolve the problem.

Please be sure that your address is absolutely correct (including your apartment number). If your package is returned to me because you supplied an incorrect address, you will have to pay to re-ship.
Additional policies and FAQs
I have a large amount of vintage lace, ribbon, trims, and buttons, as well as imperfect linens that can be used in craft/sewing projects. Let me know about your special needs and I'll try to accommodate them. My home is smoke-free, but we do have a dog. Condition of textiles: Unless I say an item is "pristine" or "perfect" you should assume that vintage/antique clothing, linens, lace, etc. will show signs of use or age. They will not look as though they were made yesterday! I'll make every effort to describe items accurately and will point out flaws and deficiencies. Following are some guidelines about condition : Excellent: Without damage but may show some evidence of age or use. Very Good: A bit more signs of wear but no obvious flaws, such as stains or holes. Good: May have minor stains or obvious signs of repairs or small holes but is still usable and/or displays well. Fair: Has obvious flaws and may be in fragile condition. Please remember: Never wash anything vintage in the washing machine! Older textiles should only be gently hand washed, and since I prefer to sell only things ready for use or display, most of my items have already been washed. Exceptions are fragile items or things unsuited to immersion in water. Please contact me with questions about condition before purchasing an item.
