Announcement    Dear shoppers,

I hope you're all safe, happy and healthy.

I've decided to open up my Etsy shop to international orders again! Yay! 😄

There are some slight changes though:

👁️ I will limit my post office runs to once a week max. This will mean it's possible you'll have to wait a bit longer than usual for your order to get shipped. Please be patient with me.

👁️ Expect delays! Postal services all around the world are struggling during this crisis, so your parcel might take a while to get there (I always ship with tracking, but I can't guarantee anything regarding duration).

👁️ Shipping companies are charging more. It's quite a bit more expensive to ship overseas atm due to limited flights, and to the US specifically because of Trump's Universal Postal Union Deal that hits us international small businesses hard. I'll try to keep the shipping costs as low as possible.

👁️ The list of countries my postal company can't ship to right now is still substantial. Therefore I will only ship within Europe and to the USA and Canada for the time being.
I can ship to Australia again, but only with a different (more expensive) company and it'll take a long route to get there. Shipping a package to Down Under costs a whopping €30 now (almost 50 AUD), but I'll add the option just in case.
Is your country not on the list and you really want to purchase something from me? Please message me, and I'll look at the possibilities with different shipping companies.

📦📦📦
Sorry for that loooong list! 😅

Please follow me on Facebook and Instagram @matishtar to stay updated on my creations, such as works in progress, behind the scenes, and when I'll have the eyeballs available again! Thank you 🖤

Stay safe out there!

Weird and wonderful handmade oddities

Hi! I'm Mariska and I live in the Netherlands 🌷 with my husband and our two rescue Beagles.

One of my biggest loves in life is collecting oddities, and as a result, our entire house has basically become one big cabinet of curiosities. This love for the weird and wonderful strongly reflects in my work, because when I discovered my creativity, I also found out that my hands apparently know only one setting when I'm creating; odd!
Everything I make turns at least into something slightly bizarre or quirky, but can also go full on dark and macabre. Either way, it's usually quite unconventional... but I like that, it suits me! So, I decided to just go with it, embrace my weirdness, and create things that I love.

🔸That's why my cute little flowers get to have eyes... my deer skull mounts get octopi wrapped around their antlers... gorgeous antique jewelry boxes become displays for my realistic human eyeballs... lovely second-hand dolls get melancholic Burtonesque looks on their faces... and bottles get upcycled to become Soul Jars with trapped souls peeping through zippers.🔸

I get asked quite often wether or not I offer commissions or custom pieces, and I'd like to address this here (as well as in my FAQ).
Sadly, for the time being, I do not.
Because I suffer from chronic health problems, my ability to create new pieces is always dependent on how much work my body allows me to do; some days I can move mountains, and other days I can hardly move at all.
This means my productivity varies greatly and at times my shop will have no (or just a few) listings. But don't worry, I will always make new creations because it's what I love to do, sometimes it just takes a little longer. Thank you for being patient with me! 🖤

So, in short; I create eclectic art for different & unique people who are looking for equally different & unique items, and who are not afraid to go off the beaten track with their home decor.

🔹🐙Embrace the Weirdness!💀🔹

Frequently asked questions
Where do you get your skulls, are they ethically sourced?

The (mostly roe deer) skulls I use in my work I find at flea markets and thrift stores, so most of the time I have little to no info on their provenance. But that's okay, as I prefer to look for the beauty they give us even after death. Animals are gorgeous to me, I absolutely love them. And their anatomy, skulls, bones, antlers, I find equally stunning and interesting.

What I aim to do when I decorate a skull is honoring that beauty by giving it a second life, a new purpose as an artwork. So instead of rotting away somewhere or being discarded at a flea market, it will hopefully be admired for years to come.

Why do your handmade eyeballs have a diameter of 30mm? Isn't the average human eye about 25mm in diameter?

That's absolutely true! But, funny story, when I make 25mm eyes, literally everyone I show them to thinks they're way too small to be a convincing human eyeball. Apparently people believe their own eyes to be much bigger than they actually are!
So in order to make them APPEAR more realistic, I have to actually make them slightly LESS realistic by adding some millimetres. Plus, at this size they fit perfectly as props in skulls!
I still sporadically use the smaller 25mm eyes too, though. Because of their lighter weight they're perfect to mount in faux flowers or other projects.

I just want the eyes themselves, not the boxes they come in, so do you sell the handmade eyeballs separately?

I don't. Sorry to disappoint!
It's mostly a time management thing. When I sell the eyeballs separately, I can't keep up with the demand. I love making the eyeballs, but making them 24/7 would probably make me hate it. So I toned it down a bit, to create more time for other projects, and I really like this balance as it is now.
This way I can pre-make the sets and spread the workload a bit more evenly for myself. It's something I have to take into account as a chronic pain spoonie.
I try to create original boxes and find the most beautiful vintage/antique boxes and tins to really complement the eyeballs and give them a unique way to be displayed. I take pride in the compiling of the sets, and love how well the boxes and eyes work together.

Do you take commissions / custom orders?

I have taken on commissions in the past, and although I love working together with a customer to create their dream piece, it can be problematic for me. I suffer from chronic pain, and the amount of activity my body allows me in a day is quite unpredictable. Therefore having to meet deadlines became really stressful for me, because sometimes I can't work for days at a time, usually with the worst timing possible.
I've found that for me, being free to choose what I work on, when I want to work on it, not only keeps me happier and less stressed, it also increases my productivity.
You're always welcome to let me know what you'd love me to make some day (and maybe I will), but actual commissions will only be accepted on very rare occasions.

De optie tot betaling met iDeal verdwijnt zodra ik wil afrekenen, hoe los ik dit op? (A question about payment methods for my local customers in the Netherlands)
