Announcement   welcome!

you will find several directions in here, which perhaps at first blush, appear distinct.

THE CLASSICs

en plein air, walk in the woods, visit my father in maine, figure out sky, water & land. and when inside, the other classic: still lifes (bottles, cupcakes, persimmons...)

THE UNUSUAL
scrolls with non traditional imagery. little hand inked esoteric stories.

YES, there IS a common theme

firstly, the more formal rigor of understanding color, how to best express a sky, to capture a pastry in a way that works and is also my own - all of this then also translates back out in the more fantastical imagery of the scrolls . as for the smaller paper works, they are riskier, more experimental, and they also feed back out into the larger scroll works. finally, the unusual paper and scroll discoveries return to enhance the classics. so for me this is a continuous cycle.

and then, the CLASSICS were always a bit UNUSUAL, cigar boxes? and the UNUSUAL were always a bit CLASSIC - what is more classic than a scroll.

hello, welcome to my etsy shop.

there are many joys i derive from painting.

there is creating the painting: exploring the textures, colors, characteristics of paint. how they mix, what they do with each other. looking, sketching, creating a mise en scene. being outside and absorbing it all, or inside close and focused. & all the related activities: reading critiques, theory. visiting galleries and museums. being with other artists talking shop over cheap, art opening wine.

then there is the joy of YOU finding my painting, actually buying it, and hanging it on your wall (or giving it as a gift). where it finally ends up and someone else looks at it every day, week, month, year. now that is something really neat.

now i've met some of you, "my patrons," when i hand over a painting locally or when traveling. but mostly i do not get any facetime. which is a shame. so i want to make etsy as personal as possible. please contact me. ask me questions. tell me things. send me photos. about art. about design. about how twilight falls in your neck of woods. any of those kind of things.

& if you are (ever) in the sf bay area, i will gladly hand deliver a painting, or meet you at sfmoma, or go out to eat among the food trucks.

thank you for stopping by!—matthew
