About

MD Pottery

Making pottery is my way of relaxing and tuning out the chaos of the regular day to day world. I make primarily wheel thrown pottery with some alterations. I slip, brush, dot and trail the surface of these pots until I am satisfied with their pattern and feel. They are then put into the kiln to be fired and blasted with salt and soda ash.

What is Salt Fired Pottery?
Salt firing is a very old technique that has been used in ceramics for centuries. I place my work into a gas kiln, and then during the firing process, spray or dump salt and soda into the kiln. These materials volatilize in the kiln and come to rest on the pots leaving a beautiful, satiny, soft surface. I love to see how the kiln firing alters and enhances the pots that I create.

I continue to learn and explore in the world of clay. I am always looking to push my designs and patterns to evolve and grow. I share a studio space with six other funky, fine potters and sculptors in the lovely River Arts District in Asheville, NC.

In my adult life, I have lived in Vermont, Hawai'i and North Carolina. I always seek out beautiful places to live with lots of great outdoor activities. I began making things out of clay in high school and have not stopped since.
