Painting wooden fish
A family passion for handcrafting and sustainability
This is my newest shop, the first one started in 2013: www.mediterraneanart.etsy.com
We established Mediterranean Art intending to collect beach and unused materials to give them new life. Inspired by the colourful and bright island lifestyle, we are shared between Sicily and Malta, in the heart of the Mediterranean. Most home accents are made from reclaimed wood or driftwood. Our best handwork is in the coastal home style, designed to look old and weathered. We use non-toxic paint. Our one of kind crafts enhances your living spaces bringing sea breeze and scent of our beaches and green fields.
The synergy between wood and textiles comes from our family. My mum (my uncle’s sister) and my grandma have been tailors for all their life, so I have always been surrounded by fabrics and creativity.
We love making women jewellery and accessories from scraps and upcycled textiles. I design cosy scarf necklaces for ladies who want to be bold, enjoying colours and softness. Our jewellery pieces show personality and joy, changing a basic outfit in their fashion style.
Each item is handmade by me or my uncle with all care and attention deserved. We always come up with new ideas, so you will surely find something new in our shop.
Follow us on social media for looking behind the scenes and read my blog for learning more about us and our collections.

Before being in love with crafts, I'm a incessant reader. Adore collecting buttons. Listening to the radio is part of my crafting mood.

Care instructions
It would be a good idea to wash your necklace or bracelet by hand from time to time. I suggest you to soak the jewel in warm water and very little liquid detergent (for synthetic textiles) for about 15/30 minutes. Rinse gently, squeeze just a little with your hands and leave it to dry on a drying rack not in the sun directly. Don’t forget to put an empty bowl underneath for dripping. Absolutely not to be put in the tumble dryer!
I recommend keeping the fabric jewels in a drawer, in a bag, or in a dry place without direct sunlight. Keep away from small children because they can be dangerous (like any jewelry). Like all fabrics, if exposed outdoors in the long term they become dusty, discolored and odorous.
Materials
Textiles
We use scraps of cotton, jersey, stretch cotton, microfiber, acrylic fabric sold in large yarns, originated from EU countries. In particular, I purchase from a company that personally collects threads from textile factories in Northern Italy, for which it has the one-off availability of a color or pattern.
Wood
Walnut shells and olive wood are collected personally by my uncle in our friends' field. Other kinds of wood are purchased in local shops.
Craft room
Since my shop is not a full time job, I cannot afford to rent a space for working-only purposes. So I work in a room of my flat, in an urban center. I don't have pets and don't smoke. When I finish my duties, I store all yarns and jewelry in a dedicated wardrobe and drawers. Like clothes, yarn are damaged if exposed to light and open air. I don't like to waste time and energy, so I keep everything with particular care.
Gift wrapping and packaging
I prefer recycling and saving money so you won’t pay a fortune for our jewels. So I use pages of magazines to make bags in which I pack orders, decorating them with colored raffia.
