Meghan Sutton Clay

~ Process

All pottery in my shop in handmade by me from start to finish. I currently work out of a community studio in Yonkers, NY where I'm also a tech. Here I can be found loading all the kilns and mixing all glazes for the other community members and students.

Each piece starts as a ball on clay on the pottery wheel. I throw each piece and once they've dried up a bit, I turn it over to trim the bottom. The next step in my process is adding a clay slip to the surface and carving my design. Once they've been trimmed, handled, slipped and carved, into the kiln they go for their first fire to approx 1800 degrees. Once they've cooled and come out of the kiln, glaze is applied and fired a second and final time, to 2300 degrees.

~ About me

While studying painting at Kutztown University in PA, I decided to take an intro ceramics course to fill an elective space in my schedule. Literally the rest is history and I've been working in clay every since! After college, and finishing my painting degree, I began a work exchange at a clay studio in the area for about 3 years. After taking some time away from clay, living in the mountians in Northern California, and getting married, I'm back at it and working as a studio tech in Yonkers NY. Here in NY is where I started my Pottery business and I am so excited to share the journey with you all <3

A question I get asked pretty often is if my pottery is dishwasher safe. Yes, all the pottery I make is dishwasher safe. Although to ensure a longer life, hand washing is recommended.
