Colorful, one of a kind and limited edition eco-friendly upcycled and vintage jewelry

I took what was intended to be a three month trip to Spain that would ultimately change the course of my life. I arrived in 2008 to a small fishing village on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea called Cabo de Palos and quickly fell in love, both with my new life and a certain marine biologist that would become my husband. It was here that Melefant was born. In a new, inspiring environment, I began creating jewelry using a mixture of vintage and recycled components such as leather, found objects, paper and lace. The lace items quickly became a hit, plus my favorite material to work with! I adore the endless variation of patterns, delicacy and fascinating history of lace. An added benefit of using these materials is that I can create large, eye-catching 3D statement pieces that are extremely lightweight and comfortable to wear.

After a friend gifted me a collection of doilies handmade by her great-great grandmother, I found the larger pieces enabled me to expand the lace line to include bracelets and necklaces, and as a result, working directly with families creating custom heirloom jewelry became a huge part of my work. Flash forward to 2014 when my husband and I moved to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and my side gig became my full time job.

Most of the lace and crochet items used in my upcycled designs are sourced from secondhand sources or Cape Cod families. I love custom work, and I love sharing stories about the original creators! If you are interested in having me transform your family’s handmade treasures, DM me or email melissa.m.crim gmail.com. I love the act of transforming a piece of history and giving new life and a modern twist to traditional handicrafts and vintage components.

I obtained a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting from Shepherd University in 2006. My work can be found in boutiques in the US and Spain, and I participate in various local events and artisan markets in the Boston and Cape Cod area.

All of my jewelry is created by me in my home studio located in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

You can read more about my story here in the October 2015 issue of Love Live Local: http://lovelivelocal.com/chat-with-a-local-melefant/
