Adventures in beauty.

What is beautiful? Why does it make us feel a certain way? How do we improve our surroundings to make it more beautiful? But will it be perceived as beautiful by the next door neighbor?

I don't have real answers for anything. All I know is beauty is important. Understanding (or at least respecting) the beautiful things we see everyday. And if I can make something that helps cultivate sense of beauty, great. If I can help someone see that it's not the accessory that makes them beautiful, the accessory merely compliments what was already present, that's even better.

Big & Blooming should be about taking the space around you and taking it to new levels. When I wear something or mount something on my wall that truly inspires me, that's what I feel. Lifted. Hopefully I can convey some of that through my work.

*How it all began
When I was young, I thought the creative gene had skipped me. My mother was a ballet dancer (for real) and my father flew helicopters for hospitals (but in his spare time, was a builder of everything from computers to carpentry). I didn't seem to carry either parents' sense of creative flow, among other things. It wasn't until middle school when I finally found some friends that inspired me to give drawing a try.

I was bad. I mean really bad. Two steps from stick figures bad. But I got better. I built my own creative flow from scratch. Year after year, I practiced (math class probably wasn't the best time...) and even though I didn't get much support in the beginning, I kept going. I even changed my plans about college to incorporate graphic design instead of science (wanted to be an herbologist, a healer).

College gave me something real to hold onto. Let's face it, the fine art field can be less than lucrative. I did some different jobs and then during a little hiatus between work I decided to teach myself something new (this seems to happen like clock work when I get bored). Kanzashi became an outlet for my flow. Then I was able to travel to Japan for a year (a long time dream) and was crazy busy, non stop action. When I came back to the States, I landed a good job and didn't have time for such childish things. Or so I thought.

No. I needed an outlet. And sure enough, here I am and it feels like fate has guided me back to my creative roots. Right now, Big & Blooming is just a little Etsy shop but with a little luck, I think it could be much more.

For me, everything starts and ends with beauty. I've traveled a fraction of the world and it seems like every person I meet has a different idea of what is beautiful. I want to help the world share these perspectives.

This shop holds my kanzashi that are for sale. "Kanzashi" means "ornate hair ornament" in Japanese. I have observed and attempted to recreate traditional kanzashi used by geisha and maiko with my own style.

All pieces come from a smoke-free home. Though I have cats and a dog, all fabrics and supplies are sealed when not being worked on to help keep out any pet dander or hair that may try to tag along for the ride.

*Current Goal
Raise enough money to help a friend travel to Japan (for the first time)= $2500
