Merging metals with organics to create uncommon wearables for the common good

Who we are~

We are a wife and husband duo, Holly and Steven, living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, NC. HELLO!! We say we built MergingMetals on love, creativity, and disagreements; we may not always see eye to eye but we envision the same thing ~ unconventional and captivating pieces that you will surely adore ❤️ We are so glad you're here!

Hi! I'm Holly, founder of MergingMetals. I grew up in rural Wisconsin, always fascinated and intrigued with animals and nature. I'd fill my pockets with rocks, leaves, sticks and dirt as a child. I'd bring home every snake, frog, and living being I could find (of course my parents would let them go).

During high school I volunteered with our local humane society and took that love with me all the way to Colorado to go to school to become a Certified Veterinary Technician.

During that time I worked for the second largest Humane Society in the U.S., establishing and operating their mobile spay/neuter clinic for cats. I worked there for 13 years and another nonprofit spay/neuter clinic for feral cats for 9 years.

I wasn't through, I finished my Bachelors in Health Science worked for the Rocky Mountains Lions Eye Bank as Recovery Technician, recovering corneas for transplant.

Giving back has always been second nature, now we want to give back to you and our planet. At MergingMetals we do exact that, merge metal with organics through the process of ‘electroforming’. We create unconventional and unique mixed metal wearables each lovingly handcrafted.

ELECTROFORMING, THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE MAGIC!

What is Electroforming?

This is the abbreviated version of what we do! First we hand paint any area we want to encapsulate in copper with a conductive paint. Then the piece goes into a copper sulfate, sulfuric acid solution along with copper bars. We hook the painted piece up to electricity and over time (typically 24-72 hours) copper from the bars is transferred anywhere we painted. Lastly we lovingly hand patina, polish, and apply a metal sealant to each item. From start to finish each piece takes approximately 4-7 days to complete. Organic materials are now encapsulated in 100% pure copper. How cool is that?!

Why Copper?
Health, Beauty, Recyclability, Antimicrobial

o Copper is our oldest ore and occurs in pure form. It was first discovered over 5,000 years ago and harnessed for its beauty. Early Mesopotamians, Egyptians, and Native Americans prized the metal for its aesthetic qualities and use in religious and spiritual ceremonies, as well as for medical procedures. Jewelry is a great way of taking in small amounts of the needed mineral. The healing properties of copper, in the form of bracelets, necklaces, rings, or earrings, can allow a minimal amount of the mineral into the body without overwhelming it. Some wearers of copper jewelry find it relieves the symptoms of arthritis and circulation issues.

o Everyone is looking for materials that aren’t harmful to the environment and that will be available for future generations to come. Over 85% of mined copper throughout history is STILL in circulation today, since 100% of copper can be recycled without any loss of its original mined quality, it is the 3rd most recycled metal.

o Copper is antimicrobial! It kills bacteria and viruses, within minutes. In the 19th century, exposure to copper would have been an early version of constantly sanitizing one's hands. Since then, studies have shown that copper is able to destroy the microbes that most threaten our lives. It has been shown to kill a long list of microbes, including Norovirus, MRSA, a Staph bacteria that has become resistant to antibiotics, virulent strains of E. coli that cause food-borne illness, and Corona-viruses—possibly including the novel strain currently causing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Frequently asked questions
Chains & Photography

Chains
If you would like a certain chain length other than what’s listed, please let us know (additional fees may apply). Chains can be crafted in sterling silver, copper, bronze, gunmetal, leather, satin rope or hand dyed silk.

Photography
We make every effort to photograph our jewelry as accurately as possible. We photograph our items on a neutral background and do not "Photoshop" any pictures to enhance or change the true color of the stone. Also, due to the wide variety of computer screens and monitors, the color of the stones can differ depending on your color setting on your monitor/screen.

Metals Used and Definitions

There are trade-offs for each metal and process~

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% alloy metal, usually copper.

Fine silver is 99.9% pure silver but is a softer metal than sterling silver.

Silver-plating is a chemical process that adds a thin layer of silver to the item, which is made of a different metal (typically copper, brass, pewter). Over time, the silver plating can be worn off and the base metal underneath can be exposed. Silver plate is considered the most cost effective/economical alternative to the more expensive forms of solid silver jewelry.

Silver filled is the process of adding a thicker layer of silver mechanically bonded to a base metal.

Care instructions

Pure copper can change color when exposed to air, elements, moisture and oils from your skin (think Statue of Liberty). This is called oxidation. Your skin may turn a green hue due to your own body chemistry. All copper pieces have sealed with Protectaclear to slow this process. Your item may require additional sealant if worn often to avoid oxidation (or if you love it like I do, let it go!) The more you wear a ring the shinier it becomes.

Most find it a favorable trait (greening) as copper has healing properties. From time to time you can use wax or nail polish to guard off oxidation. Polishing copper jewelry (including chain) is as easy as finding an acidic item (lemon juice, vinegar) in the kitchen or simply using a polishing cloth.

We wholesale many of our items to boutiques. Every item is one of a kind, however many items can be recreating with varying sizes, shapes and colors as no two stones are alike. Send us a convo for availability and for more information.

Cancellations

Cancellations are accepted until item is marked as shipped which is usually the same day. We ship VERY fast.

Ring sizing

Generally you would go up 1/4 size for rings 5-6mm (0.19”-0.25”) wide and 1/2 size for rings 7-8mm (0.27”-0.31”) wide. This is because a wide band allows more space under the band for the finger than narrow rings do. Add an allowance of 0.25 to 0.5 size for rings with wider styles.
Finger sizes are prone to change with temperature, humidity, exercise, what you have been eating, time of day, time of the month, pregnancy and other factors. Your right hand is usually 0.5 size larger, so if you are right handed and have a size 7 ring that fits the left hand it is reasonable to think that a 7.5 will fit the right hand, but again this varies depending on the person. If you’re interested in one of our rings & it isn’t your size send us a convo.

Where do we get our stones?

We have mined many of the stones we use ourselves. Other stones we have purchased from select sellers from gem & mineral shows. We also love to support other Rockhounds, we purchase stones they’ve collected. All items are ethically and sustainably sourced.
