Announcement   we are two artists who design, create, and produce all of our work in our two studios...(except when we're out on the road collecting!)
one studio is mostly metalwork, and the other is mostly thread.
We also collaborate on several jewelry collections, including our favorite medium..which is a fabric-like mesh medium made of stainless stell or brass..it is very cool and wonderfully lightweight against the skin.
We are avid collectors of,and share a love for the stones & rocks of the american southwest, and always have an unusual group of turquoise pieces on hand....in addition to turquoise, we also collect copper pieces from the 1940's to the 1970's

see more of our work in our other sites....

I love this necklace and the shop, in general. One thing - the photo made the necklace look longer than it actually is, so it was a bit of a surprise at first, but still a great piece.

About

we are two artists who live & work by the french broad river in beautiful downtown asheville, north carolina

In a world of mass production & robot labor, hand-crafted work from master craftsmen is more significant than ever. With expertise working in metal and thread, artisans Denise Carbonell and Derek Dominy opened their aptly-named shop in the mid-1990s—first on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, then moving to Red Hook’s Van Brunt Street in 2008,and recently moving to Asheville,N.C. by the French Broad River and located in the Historic Cotton Mill Studio. We are each self-taught in our discipline and try to encourage people to learn skills that will help them to become more self-sufficient, such as making their own clothing and furniture. We try to keep the experience in our shop real and human. We often have a fire in the fireplace, and welcome anyone to sit down and enjoy it. The unique and peculiar items at Metal and Thread include vintage musical instruments, jewelry, steel furniture, textiles that cover a wall..or a chair..or the floor, oil paintings, vintage worker's tools of all kinds, chainmaille headdresses...along with denise carbonell's black and white photographs of old, lost architecture and dried out vegetation.
