About

History + Empowerment = M&P Chainmaille Jewelry

Who is Metals & Pieces?

M & P is a sister trio consisting of myself (Melissa), my sister Allie and our rescued puppy-sister Winnie. We are determined to bring the empowering style of chainmaille into the lives of superwomen everywhere. We believe in reminding every woman of their inner strength and encouraging each one to show off that badass inner warrior through our jewelry designs. We’re also passionate about ridiculously long drives, Chevy trucks, and pie.

Why chainmaille?

I fell down the rabbit hole in discovering chainmaille. What started out as a random ‘how-to’ book find on a retail therapy day, bought on a whim for shits and giggles, gave my life a rapid 180 degree change, and then proceeded to infect the lives of those around me—or mostly Allie.

Well what is chainmaille?

Badass crochet anyone? Chainmaille is a series of interwoven rings connected in sheets to make everything from small decorative items such as earrings up to enormous garments like bras, dresses, and entire suits of armor. Armor is probably what you’re most familiar with. Knights, joust and battle, crusades, the Medieval period, turkey legs and potatoes…

Historically speaking, chainmaille was used as armor either by itself or as a shirt underneath full plate armor. The mesh prevented or lessened most stabby style wounds, turning what would have been a gusher into a mere bruise (not even a flesh wound). At that point steel was the metal of choice, and the density of the weave (or interlocking chain pattern) determined how protected the body was, and also had something to do with the extreme weight of the garment. Steel garments could weigh in at upwards of 60 lbs! (Which would be why we use aluminum: 1/3 of the weight, plus no rust!)

Fast forward to today and why should we care about any of this. Chainmaille is ancient history, yes?

NO.

Wrong.

Think again.

Chainmaille armor is still worn! Well, in a utilitarian fashion. Butchers use chainmaille gloves while chopping meat. Some divers wear entire suits when dealing with sharks. And a small sponge sized section is fantastic for scrubbing cast iron pots.

But that’s not what we’re talking about.

All quips aside, chainmaille jewelry is the definition of badass. These weaves and patterns have a heritage that still speaks to us even in the modern day. Each weave evokes the ancient power that warriors of old are known for. Wear your strength on your sleeve. Show people your courage and that you’re not afraid to flaunt it. Every weave, from the most delicate to the most armor-esque screams power and independence. We are our own greatest warriors, so why not show it off?

Designing chainmaille jewelry took me from an introvert who simply studied history to a confident woman who brings the power of history into each modern creation. Allow me to share my inspirations with you. No matter your style, there’s a weave that fits your look while giving you the extra umph you deserve. And no matter the piece you choose, your badassery will always shine through.
