About

Gazing upon culture

Shinduk ('Treasure chest' or 'casket' in Bengali) represents the modern Bengali woman's trove of collectibles. Consider this shop the reflection of a cultural mindset that is ethnic in its roots and truly cosmopolitan in its acknowledgement of beauty everywhere.

As curator, designer and photographer for this store, I try to bring to my patrons a changing selection of the best handcrafted items I can find in West Bengal. My focus is on jewellery and handmade/handworked natural fabrics. Most items are one-off, not reproducible unless stated. I design and custom-produce most of the silver. A few items are vintage. Almost everything is fair-trade.

The rationale of the collection has a little to do with my history. The face of a region changes and morphs over several thousand years, its memories abide in its people's culture. Calcutta brings me that culture, and I try to use the 'pinhole camera' of this shopfront to show it to you.

The presentation of the collection has a little more to do with the fiercely intellectual, culture-loving, travelling characteristics of many Bengalis. They have long been open to intercultural influences, enthusiastically adopting whatever fits their penchant for ideals, 'adda' or discussion, and love of the romantic. I love showing you why I think something is beautiful :).

And it has much to do with the sheer joy I take in the variety that India still presents me with -- tribal art and motifs, reified fashion, carefully revived embroidery and weaving techniques (kantha and silk), influences borrowed from neighboring geographic regions.

But the collection always strives to be elegant, eclectic, unusual, and memorable. I hope you enjoy looking at my items as much as I enjoy collecting and making them.

Welcome to Shinduk at The Connoisseur's Corner, where you will find a trove of hand-picked objects and art. Some of these will be 'found' items with their own story to tell, some will have been made or re-made by me. All will have that mark of beauty, the 'something-incomparable' that gladdens the eyes and the heart long after the first glimpse. Look, linger, choose, and be as delighted as I am to find and bring you these things.

Accepted payment methods

  • Accepts Etsy gift cards
Payment
I accept Direct Checkout and Paypal within 5 days of purchase.
Shipping
I will use the least expensive methods for shipping. If you wish to purchase insurance please write to me before payment.

The pottery originals are heavier terracotta and cost more to ship. I try to absorb as much of the shipping cost I can, but the USA is very wide and sometimes pottery has to travel a very long way without mishap. It is in my interest to make sure that you are happy with your purchase, so I will do the best I can to reach it to you safely.

If something gets damaged in transit, let me know. If you paid for insurance, you’ll get a refund; if you haven’t, I’ll work with you and see what I can do.
Refunds and Exchanges
Yes, I do accept returns shipped within 15 days of purchase. Items must be returned in original condition. You will have to bear the return shipping cost and ensure that the returned item reaches me safely; I urge you to insure it in case it is lost in transit.
