From orthoptist to entrepreneur

It all started back in 2008 when I was working as an orthoptist at a hospital in north London. One of the biggest challenges and obstacles to successfully treating amblyopia was the child's poor cooperation with patching. Most of kids simply refused to wear the sticky patches and some were even allergic. However, there were very few alternatives so we just had to advise parents to persevere as best they could.

Then one day a patient turned up in the clinic wearing a cloth patch her mother had bought from the internet. The child tolerated this patch much better and, more importantly, her vision had improved which meant that the cloth patch was just as effective as the sticky patch. Unfortunately we were unable to buy a supply of these patches for our hospital as the company was based outside the EU. So, over the following months, I eventually came up with my own cloth design and started sending samples to my orthoptic colleagues at various eye departments throughout the UK. There was great interest in the product, so in my spare time, I made up some patches in a variety of patterns, launched a basic website and M'eye Patch was born!

My patches are registered as a class one medical device and CE marked as a legal requirement for selling to the NHS in the UK. The design is also registered at the Intellectual Property Office as British design no. 40126242.

I have recently moved to Portugal but I still supply the NHS in the UK and send patches worldwide via our website www.meyepatch.co.uk. I have retained a UK distributor and still make most of the patches myself but have a Portuguese assistant who comes to help me out if the demand is particularly high, especially with wholesale orders.

I no longer work in clinical practice. M'eye Patch is my full time job and I love knowing that my patches are making a difficult treatment easier for many thousands of children across the world.
