Scientist turned potter
Life is short and we only live it once. Mia Zoi Ceramics was born with that notion in mind. ‘Mia Zoi’ translates to ‘one life’ in Greek (Μια Ζωή). One life, that’s all we’ve been given, and we need to make the most of it. We need to spend it doing things we love, things that fulfil us, things that make us happy.
I’ve always tried to live my life following my heart. After a long and successful career in science, I realised that my day-to-day job did not make me that happy anymore. I seemed to have lost the excitement, the satisfaction, everything that made me fall in love with science. It was time for a change. So, in January 2019 I decided to quit my job, and take a break. Take the time to find myself again and fill my day with things I love doing.
I’ve always loved pottery and I’ve been collecting pieces through my travels around the world (one of the perks of being a scientist!). But up to that moment I had never had a go at it. After I quit my job, I signed up for a weekend pottery tasting session at a local studio. And that was it. I fell in love again! The weekend course was followed by other courses and I found myself spending more and more time in the studio. Throwing on the wheel worked a bit like meditation for me and it helped me find my balance again. Feeling the connection with the earth, with what’s grounding us, exploring shapes, colours, textures. In a way, pottery is another form of science. And that’s how I approach it too, always with my lab book at hand! Taking notes, running my little experiments, waiting impatiently for the results and sharing with others. Once a scientist, always a scientist I suppose!
And here I am, with my own online shop, selling at crafts markets and selected retail shops. Who would have thought! Life is full of surprises…And full of opportunities too!
