The journey of Corner Bodega Publishers
Pre-pandemic, I was immersing myself more into the New York comic and zine scene and attending a lot of fun and creative book fairs (shout-out to the NY Book Fair at Moma PS1). I started to get the bug to self-publish some of my work, and I loved the idea of starting to work with fellow artists to collaborate again. Slowly I began to publish my own riso-printed zines that I produced out of the SVA Riso lab. Once the pandemic hit, the SVA Riso lab closed (it finally just reopened this July). This led me to create a studio in my apartment with my own printer, cutting and binding tools and to set up shipping and social media marketing. I leaned on a local print shop to assist with the finishing trimming.
I’ve always had a desire to create a company that would allow me to have a voice in the publishing industry as well as collaborate with and curate emerging artists and creatives. When New York went into lockdown, I had time to think about what I’d like to focus my creative energy on. My full-time job is centered around creating better experiences for users, but I’m doing that to benefit an organization for a paycheck. I wanted to create a company that makes tangible objects that people could touch, experience, and hopefully bring some joy into their lives.
We’ve been focusing on mostly photography and illustration, keeping the zines compact and simple. Our zines are perfect for collectors and gift-giving, but also for people who are just getting into zines. We hope to inspire and have fun with what we create.
Most of the artists I work with are already immersed in the art and photography world in cities with vibrant creative communities, so not only are we publishing pieces of art, but also consuming and observing the ever-evolving art surrounding us. I look for artists to come up with a snapshot of their current artistic endeavors and tell their stories through each work. The artists themselves will help define who we are as a publishing company, and we are always looking for new voices to diversify our storytelling.
