We hope you enjoy our following story, and a little bit about what you can expect to find in each of our shop sections. Please feel free to message us anytime with your questions, comments, and, dare I add "criticisms"? ;)
I (Heidi) have always been a crafter. My earliest memories are of my brothers and I creating white paper snowflakes that we gave as gifts to our parents and each other for Christmas.
At age 6, my grandmother taught me how to cross stitch on a stamped pillowcase. Later, around age 8 or 9, I began purchasing small kits and completing them as gifts to family and my beloved teachers.
My teen years found me dabbling in fabric painting T-shirts, both to wear, and as gifts as well.
On New Year's Day 1992, Dean's mother taught me how to stitch a plastic canvas cross bookmark. (Our families had recently met, and we were getting together for the first time for the holiday.) Ever since, I have created additional plastic canvas bookmarks as well as ornaments and two different sizes of star tree toppers. In time for Christmas 2015, I took on a huge couple of years' project that kept me pretty busy: personalized placemats for our children, nieces, and nephews.
My first experience with creating products to sell began after a dear aunt moved to our area. She worked in the mail room, and asked me if I'd create 4 or 5 fabric painted T-shirts, and she'd take them to work. She was able to display them on her rolling mail cart, and sold them for 10.00 each. One time, a gentleman requested a shirt with fish on it. Though that was far different from the hearts and flowers I was used to painting, he really liked it and bought it from my aunt!
When I was 16, this same aunt, whose name was Lucinda, gave me her rubber stamp collection. That same afternoon, she taught me what she knew, including how to clean and care for the stamps.
I really enjoyed learning how to create handmade cards for all occasions, and have saved several from those early years. Decades later, I fondly remember my dear Aunt Lucinda whenever I create cards, bookmarks, To/From gift tags, and envelopes, etc. I've learned much over the past 25 + years. If my aunt were still living, I know she'd be thrilled knowing I've already begun teaching my own daughters how to creatively create their own cards!
I continue to enjoy learning new techniques including embossing and die cutting using a Big Shot machine, as you'll see in my newest designs. My passion remains with embossing powders as well as coloring with watercolor pencils before "painting" the images to make them my own. Various ribbon (now organized on a holder Dean made) abundantly appeals to me as well, and I try and incorporate ribbon wherever I can. Finally, paper brads and eyelets make their way into some of my cards to add dimension and "pop"! You can look forward to receiving a signed, handcrafted "Thank You note" in each of your packages!
The Christmas before I left for college, I decided to try my hand at something new. I purchased the supplies to create approximately 2 feet around Christmas wreaths for my mother and aunts. I hot glued "Christmas picks" and tied festive ribbon around each one as well. The ladies loved receiving their wreaths then, and continue to enjoy them each year when they decorate their homes for Christmas!
While I was away at college, I no longer had time for hobbies. Then, in 1997, I married the love of my life, and we just celebrated 21 amazing/challenging years. For seventeen-and-a-half of those years, we have been busily caring and training our four equally unique, and special, blessings. Now that they are getting older, we've been able to enjoy our hobbies more. More important than those, though, is training our children to follow the Lord Jesus Christ's will for their lives. We have also begun to pass along our knowledge to our children of how to create our hobbies, and/or have encouraged them to learn their own! We invite you to look for our children's creations in our shop as well!
A little bit more about Dean, is that when he's not fishing and trying to catch "the big one", Dean enjoys reading books and watching documentaries; especially about WWII! Hobbies for Dean have been fixing computers (sometimes for a little bit of money on the side); and woodworking. Dean dreams of being able to turn the latter hobby into a profitable business. Dean first began woodworking at his late-father's knee. Over the past 2 decades Dean has honed his skills, and now absolutely loves woodworking! He especially enjoys perfecting hand-cut dovetails! His interests lie with using mostly hand tools, and he is the main carpenter for our wood crafts and products. Dean hand makes all of the wooden switch plates, from standard to oversized. He has also done custom work, including room transitions and custom cabinets. For our home, he's built shelves and hutches. His creme` de` la` creme` , though, is the pie safe he built for me to store our homeschool books and supplies in! In between "life", that wonderful piece of furniture took Dean 2 years to build! In the summer of 2015, Dean taught me (Heidi) how to make Turkey Napkin Holders. (Available now as custom orders only.) I especially enjoyed being taught how to run the band saw!
Personally. I have loved reading for myself, as well as reading aloud to our children--even now that they are older, I still enjoy reading aloud to them. I especially have enjoyed the honor of teaching them each to read themselves! I enjoy playing games with my family, baking, and gardening; especially tending my flowers. I also enjoy watching wholesome movies like Ever After and the series, When Calls the Heart. More recently, I've been enjoying getting acquainted with Doris Day and Cary Grant movies!
I mentioned teaching each of our 4 children how to read. Yes, we are a close-knit, homeschooling family. We love to play games (board and cards, etc.), fish, drive out west to visit relatives, and most importantly, serve in our church together as a family.
In addition to jewelry, I love to sew Beautiful Blankets, especially Baby Frame Blankets. I also enjoy stitching plastic canvas ornaments and crafts (available in our Ornate Ornaments Gifts and Trendy Tree Topper Gifts sections!) I also love to create handmade/handcrafted stamped greeting cards. You'll find a handwritten thank you note in each of your orders!
More recently, I've thoroughly been enjoying creating my first ever quilt! This will be a gift for our oldest, our son, Greg, who is set to graduate from high school spring of 2019! Several years' ago, I spent quite a bit of time removing denim pockets from jeans from 4 different generations of boy/men from both sides of the family. I then cut out 5" squares; there are almost 400 of them! The quilt top was completed in a little less than a month this past summer 2018; it features various shades of 5 inch denim squares. Several pockets were strategically placed kiddy-corner as I completed sewing each row. Update May 2019. I was unable to complete Greg's quilt in time, but I am determined to finish it to gift to him in a special way in the near future. You can check out the progress I made on this quilt this summer, here: #midwestcottageusa
Let's get to know more about our daughter, Esther! This 15-1/2 year old, diligent Christian young lady, loves to read classic literature such as Little Women, and most recently, books by Robin Jones Gunn and Lori Wick have interested her! She also enjoys playing with her sisters, and baking. However, she really loves animals! Besides sharing the care of our 2 felines, she has a job caring for one of our neighbors' "menagerie". This includes dogs, cats, and chickens! For the last half of 2018, she learned to use light therapy to ease the pain of an older dog that has since passed. Esther is considering the possibility of becoming a vet tech in the future!
What Esther contributes to our shop, is that she is a self-taught crocheter. For several years', now, she's been designing and creating various gifts. Because she's moved on to other crafts, and interests, at this time, Esther has a custom hat listing with accessories available in multiple sizes for everyone!
Our 13 year old daughter, Jenna learned how to crochet by her big sister, Esther lovingly teaching her! Jenna has learned how to create loopy hair scrunchies, but to set herself apart from her sister, she tries to fit as many loops onto each hair band as possible! This is her first experience creating her own special gifts; we'll see what else she learns in the near future!
Would you like to know more about each of our shop sections?
Artsy Aromatherapy Gifts section came about as a result of a need for our daughter, Esther, to be able to smell "Basil" essential oil to help ease her suffering from headaches and migraines. Because she wanted to be able to wear her own jewelry, I converted locket pendants into pin/brooches.
Awesome Anklets Gifts section began with the desire of mine to create a unique gift for my daughter's birthday. She enjoys her anklet to this day, (though as she has grown, I've needed to add a couple of extra jump rings to her anklet!), and I also created a few for myself to match some jewelry that I already had. Our Midwest summers may be short, but we Morrell ladies enjoy wearing our anklets with flip flops as often as we can!
Beautiful Blankets Gifts section was born out of my love for sewing. At first, I created blankets with ribbon loops going around the outside edges, but there is a company, evidently, that temporarily owns a patent for the name and style of that particular blanket. So…after several weeks of brainstorming, my husband and I came up with our current baby frame blankets. I now sew matching or contrasting lengths of ribbon on all four corners of one side of each blanket. Toys, pacifier clips, and links, etc., all are able to be attached to these. The remaining looped blankets I gladly donated to our local crisis pregnancy center!
Bonny Bookmarks Gifts section features both plastic canvas cross bookmarks that I have created, as well as DIY kits that I've put together so you can learn how to create your own!
Brilliant Bracelet Gifts came about after my dad requested a custom pearl birthstone Grandmother's bracelet gift for my mom for Christmas 2014. All 9 of her grandchildren were represented by colored glass pearls. My dad then chose silver for the Secondary color choice. This meant that I spaced silver glass faux crystal rondelles as well as silver glass pearls to complete the precious bracelet design. My mom loves her bracelet, and wears it quite often.
Candid Charms Gifts section includes both silver and gold plated charm bracelets, as well as a`la` carte` charms! You are able to "candidly" create charm bracelets to fit your style (or the person you're wanting to gift them to)!
Creative Cards Gifts section features a variety of all occasion and special occasion cards. Personalization is also an option. For custom orders, as well as most of the cards I make, each usually consists of a 14-16 step process. Yes, I literally work in "steps". A few of the elements that may be featured in your cards are: embossing (both with my Big Shot and with pigment ink and powders), stamping, cutting, colored pencil coloring and "painting" (using an aqua pen); as well as materials including: brads and eyelets; ribbon; stickers (made with my 1-1/2 inch sticker maker); etc. Besides a bit of creativity, which I love, as you can see, a lot goes into the process to create each card. Lots of love goes into them as well! :)
It was my beloved Aunt Lucinda who taught me the rubber stamping "trade". Now, I fondly remember my dear Aunt Lucinda whenever I create cards, bookmarks (created for our local library as freebies--proudly displayed on their local business counter), To/From gift tags, and envelopes, etc. You can look forward to receiving a signed, handcrafted "Thank You note" in each of your packages!
At a parent/teacher conference we attended recently, I gave our highschool daughters' teachers a gift package that included 4 handcrafted Thank You cards and a matching bookmark. [To view these, please feel free to look up my FB page, "Midwest Cottage USA"]
Elegant Earrings Gifts section features Nickel free metals, as I personally developed a skin allergy to nickel early on in from the first few pieces of jewelry I created. The funny thing was, I experienced discomfort in only one of my ear lobes. However, this was enough for me to actively pursue purchasing and using nickel-free metals. As our small business grows, I am hoping to be able to purchase gold, copper, bronze, and -- my favorite -- silver metals. Of course, a couple of those experience daily price fluctuations. As such, our prices, when I use those metals, must increase as well. Thanks so much for understanding!
Gorgeous Gems Gifts were a natural extension of my Mommy N Me Gifts after receiving several custom orders for non-metal jewelry. These folks needed jewelry that they could wear without fear of their skin reacting to any metals. Natural stones, semi-precious stones, and rocks have always fascinated me! I love the look, feel, and uniqueness of each stone and bead. My late grandfather also had a great love for rocks and minerals. When he was alive, he regularly hiked the mountains of Idaho and Colorado looking for and collecting "potential" beauties! After tumbling and polishing his "diamonds in the rough", he designed and created beautiful jewelry! Perhaps his passion for creating beautiful jewelry was passed down to me? For my tenth birthday, he gave me a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind, heart shaped turquoise pendant. When I first began making jewelry, I used this pendant as a "stepping stone" to creating necklaces, and then matching bracelets and earrings. My own jewelry set using my special pendant from my grandpa is still one of my favorites to this day! Turquoise earrings, bracelets, and an anklet have joined the turquoise heart necklace! I aspire to continue to grow the variety of semi precious gemstones available in our shop. Up until this point, I have focused on matching mother daughter bracelets. However, sizes are available for both children and adults to order multiples of each bracelet. "Stacking bracelets" are a current trend, and our semi precious gemstone bracelets easily lend themselves to this trend! If you don't see a particular gemstone, or need a different size of beads, please feel free to request a custom order.
Matching jewelry sets, with your mix and match choices of: earrings, bracelets, anklets, and necklaces are planned to be added in 2021.
Harmonious Hair Gifts section includes loopy hair scrunchies created by both Esther and Jenna. Additionally, I recently was inspired to try and come up with a way to use some of the larger buttons I inherited from my maternal grandmother. I've been able to use some of the smaller ones to add interest to both mine and my daughters outfits and purses, as well as craft projects for my children, etc. I've recently been able to use some to add to our church's 2 and 3 year old Children's Church craft activities!
After finding the perfect ponytail holders from Lima Beads, I decided to create some unique, hair accessories using some of my grandma's vintage buttons. Because most of the buttons are one-of-kind most ponytail holders are unique. (Some of the buttons do have a few mates. You're welcome to inquire about multiples of any of the hair gifts we have in our shop).
Joyful Jewelry Gifts section features earrings (for now) appropriate for Valentine's Day; 4th of July, and all American holidays; Hanukkah, and all Jewish holidays; and Christmas. Gifts for family, as well as our children's teachers and youth leaders in their lives, have been given various gifts for special occasions.
Kinetic Keychains Gifts were born after a friend's recommendation. She suggested that keychains might make a nice addition to our shop! I have been enjoying creating a "little bit of everything": styles, colors, and different metals. Mixing those with gemstone beads and charms give each custom keychain it's only story! What's yours?
Mommy N Me Gifts were some of the very first items in our shop back in 2013! After coming across a beautiful poem online, I contacted the author to request her permission to use her poem so that I could create my own bracelets and include the poem. Her affirmation included a one time licensing fee, as well as a request that I include her blog name at the bottom of every poem. When you see, "tiedyedivadesigns.blogspot.com", I am giving her due recognition.
The first day of kindergarten mother daughter bracelet sets, tied with matching ribbon onto the aforementioned kindergarten poem card, continue to be some of our best sellers. I have gone on to create some variations of the original poem to fit custom requests. In 2019, I composed my own poem for mommies to be, available in pink, blue, or white! The year prior, I was inspired to create matching bracelets for our young daughter and I when we found out she needed surgery involving a vital organ. She was thrilled to wear her matching bracelet, along with me, the day after surgery. I believe that this helped ease some of her anxiety and pain. I revised the original poem to fit our special circumstance, and thought that there may be others in similar circumstances who would appreciate a special mother daughter bracelet set for an upcoming hospital stay--with or without his/her mama being able to be there. I made sure that there are no metals at all used in these particular bracelets, so they won't interfere with any hospital machines/regulations. Additionally, the stretchy bracelets are able to fit easily over the hand that doesn't have IV wires.
Ornate Ornaments Gifts section features matching star ornaments for our tree toppers. Additionally, Patriotic themed ornaments as well as custom Wedding/Anniversary ornaments are available as well! Dean's mom worked tirelessly, the months leading up to our wedding the summer of 1997, creating dozens of Christmas ornaments for Dean and I as her wedding present to us. Her story, as she told it, is that she and Dean's dad's first Christmas included very few Christmas decorations. She greatly desired for us to begin our marriage - and 1st Christmas - with beautiful, handmade ornaments. We still use the ornaments she made for us every year. That's not all, though! Grandma Carol, as we have taught our children to refer to her (even though she passed away from cancer 4-1/2 years after Dean and I were married), created a very special, memorable decoration. Dean grew up with a plastic canvas angel gracing the top of their Christmas tree; Heidi grew up with a foil covered cardboard star that her dad had carefully cut out and created years' ago for his bride for their 1st Christmas. Keeping both traditions in mind, Grandma Carol designed and created a 3-piece Star Angel using plastic canvas, and an altered pattern. I was so touched that she went to so much work for us out of an amazing love for her first born and future daughter-in-love! Our Star Angel is one of our most precious Christmas decorations that we enjoy every year!
Special Sets Gifts section has come about primarily through custom orders - which I have a particular love and passion for! Being able to both design and create new items thrills me to no end! Each year, I strive to design and create special Mother's Day and birthday gifts for my mom. (These days happen to be close to each other; so I try and put together special jewelry sets for her!) An example of a special gift that you can choose your colors for, are a custom beaded bangle memory wire bracelet and triple link earrings set. For now, silver is available. Gold, bronze/brass, and copper are set to be added in 2021. You can find the set mentioned above, here: www.etsy.com/listing/571923751/custom-2-piece-silver-jewelry-set
Trendy Tree Topper Gifts are a fairly recent addition to our shop.
The story behind these began when my children and I were working on putting up our Christmas decorations for the 2015 season. When I couldn't find our star tree topper for our 15 inch tabletop mini tree, I decided to make a new one! I stitched together two plastic canvas star shapes and left one end open to fit over the top of our tree! Wouldn't you believe that our other star was found within hours of my completing making that star tree topper! Our whole family decided that they liked the new one I made better, and so that old star was given a new place of honor. Special requests have led to me creating various colors of mini tree star toppers, as well as larger, 5 inch ones as well, that are perfect for larger trees.
Wonderful Wood Gifts features Dean's FINAL wooden switch plates. These are while supplies last only.
Youthful Yarn Gifts is where you'll find Esther and Jenna's crocheted creations. Additionally, you'll find Heidi's crochet and knitting stitch markers--with holders! These are seamless, and won't snag your precious projects!
!!!Super Sale!!! feature a variety of discounted items from our shop. They're perfect for achieving your 35.00 minimum order total for FREE shipping!

Creating Midwest Cottage USA

It was around 2010 that a friend taught me (Heidi) how to make a toggle and clasp bracelet. After that, I began dabbling in making jewelry for myself and my Mom. Through word of mouth, local friends, as well as long distance relatives began requesting custom orders. I enjoyed gaining experience through creating gifts throughout the holidays and birthdays. I'm always learning and teaching myself new techniques and better ways of improving my designs and the quality of the jewelry, cards, and various sewing crafts I create. Online videos, booklets, and both trial and error have all been involved, not to mention lots and lots of practice! Teaching myself new techniques and designs provides enough of a challenge for me to remain enthusiastic about my hobby. However, I would love to eventually see that become a genuine, small business. I love being creative! Additionally, custom orders allow me to create a very special product just for you--and individuals with unique preferences, favorite colors, and styles. Often, after completing a special request, I find that I've so enjoyed creating something new and different, that I am inspired to create those items again! New listings often lead to new customers just like you!
As a family, we go out of our way to please our customers, and your purchases are 100% guaranteed. (The only exceptions to this would be that the following cannot be returned: earrings, personalized, clearance, and custom orders. Please see our shop policies.)
Rest assured, that Midwest Cottage USA products are all new (vintage items are the only exception, of course!), and in as much prime condition as we ourselves expect in items we would purchase for ourselves.
Due to allergies that I became acquainted with early on when I first began creating jewelry, I now only use nickel-free metals. (Zinc alloy, steel; silver or gold plated, and new in 2017--sterling silver) For those who, for one reason or another, need to stay away from all metals, I have several bracelets available that contain no metals, that you can find here: www.etsy.com/listing/499960913/black-and-pink-mother-daughter-matching
As for sewing, for years I stitched on a simple Singer machine that only offered straight and zig zag stitches. A couple of years' ago, now, I was able to invest in an upgrade, and I just love the decorative stitching options I now have! I love to use variegated threads as well; the top stitching really shows these unique features! I do aspire to one day create a special quilt for each of my four children, before trying my hand at quilting additional projects that may be added to our shop!
You can find my sewing creations here: www.etsy.com/listing/247334238/owl-bird-flannel-baby-blanket-baby-boy
When I'm not creating or teaching four different grades to our four blessings, I love to read! Inspirational Historical Fiction, Christian Fiction, and Amish Fiction are a few of my favorites. I both enjoy reading a book that I can hold in my hand while drinking coffee--as well as reading from my tablet--with the larger font size that reduces eye strain!
To learn more about Dean and Esther , please feel free to refer to our shop announcement above .

What kind of metals do you use?

Metals are nickel free* and are either made with zinc alloy, antiqued silver or gold plating, sterling silver, brass, bronze, or copper. Please see individual listings for specifics. If you need or prefer certain metals, please let us know that in the "Note to Seller" section of your order. We'd be more than happy to make any substitutes you need at little or no additional cost to you! (Please note that certain metals such as sterling silver & solid gold prices fluctuate based on current market prices, and their cost will be reflected.) *Please note: Kool Keychains only all feature nickel-based plated split rings. If this is a problem for you, but you are still interested in our keychains, please message us for a custom keychain w/o metals.

Are your items from a smoke-free and pet-free home?

All items come from our smoke-free, cat-friendly home, where Perry and Jasmine are well-loved by our family! (If you have any concerns regarding pet dander, please feel free to message me, and I'll share my plans to create/prepare your products away from our cats. How do I use my essential oils on my leather disk pads that come with my aromatherapy locket pin?

To use, simply apply 1-2 drops of essential oil to the leather disk pad located inside of your locket. You can then enjoy the wonderful benefits of aromatherapy throughout your day! The disk pads can be reused many times, though it is highly recommended that you dedicate each pad to one oil or oil blend to keep from unintentionally mixing oils.
Additional replacement leather disk pads are available for each shape & size, in sets of 5: www.etsy.com/listing/287395709/aromatherapy-leather-disks-5-piece-set

Can I add personalization to my order? How much does it cost?

Many Custom Listings Include Personalization as an option. Others are required due to the nature of the products themselves. To add personalization to a product's listing with the option already in place, simply follow the instructions below the Personalization section on the product page. Most information requires a "," (comma) separating each name/color/size, etc.
For those items that you wish to have personalization added, where no personalization is offered, please message us, and we'll make every effort to include that with your products.
At this time, there is no additional cost to personalization.

What if my package hasn't arrived by the estimated deadline?

We are not responsible for your order once it is received by the US Postal Service or other shipping company. Shipping issues are to be resolved between the purchaser and the shipping company. The best way to receive a delayed package is to take the tracking number down in-person to the postal or shipping company. The worker will be able to contact the locater service they use to find your package and have it delivered to you.
Thanks so much for understanding!
