Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

I have a few custom listings in my shop already, but hope to add more soon! If you would like me to work on something custom for you, shoot me a message and I can let you know what I think!

Gift wrapping and packaging

If you are ordering multiple items of like sizes, they will be shipped in a single package/envelope.

Your products may ship in multiple packages if they contain mugs or graduation caps.

Do you charge a flat rate for caps on Etsy?

Yes, I charge a flat rate + shipping. My rate is clearly indicated on my product listing page for the custom graduation caps.

Do you already have the blank graduation caps that you decorate?

No. I will be creating a decoration for the cap you were given by your school, which you'd be mailing to me. If you have not received your cap at the time you'd like to place your order, I suggest ordering an extra cap from Amazon/other website and sending that to me to decorate. Some universities also sell extras at their school store.

Do I need to give you my blank graduation cap in advance?

Absolutely. I used to allow customers to give me the dimensions of their cap. I'd create a decoration within those dimensions and send it back for them to attach themselves. I no longer offer this as a service. There's just too much variation between caps (even from the same company) and it almost never works out perfectly. I've learned the hard way that the manufacturing of these caps is not an exact science and they are all a little bit different, even if it's by 1/16th of an inch! And the button is rarely directly in the middle. It's way easier and more effective to mail your cap to me, which I will decorate and send back to you.

Are your graduation caps custom, or do you work from templates?

No templates. Each and every cap is completely and 100% custom, according to your specifications. I pride myself on the fact that no cap that I decorate is identical to another.

Can you copy this exact graduation cap design that I found on Pinterest, internet, etc?

I get it, there are some really cool cap designs out there! With that said, my caps are based on original designs that you and I come up with together. I am happy to use quotes, color schemes, etc that you found on Pinterest! But the best way to make sure you have a cap like no other is to switch things up and make them unique! Also, I'm sure you already have, but check out my IG @midwestmermaidart to see examples and to check out my style. My decorations are generally created with a combination of paper and paint, with minimal embellishments such as rhinestones, pearls, flowers, and more.

If I have no idea what I want on my graduation cap, will you help me decide?

Of course! I tend to have rather lengthy design discussions in my Etsy conversations with those who purchase my caps! That's the fun part. But please make sure you have a general idea of what you're looking for when you reach out. I love helping people come up with designs, but remember that I do not know you personally and I don't know what you like/dislike right off the bat. You'll have to be ready with a minimum of color scheme and theme (for example - "I like pink, teal, and white and I want this quote/a big monogram/a giant pic of my dog's face." (haha)!

If I want you to decorate my graduation cap, how long do I need to contact you before my graduation?

Honestly, as soon as possible. I have a limited number of spots, especially for the spring semester. As it gets closer to graduation, I typically have to turn people away. (Which I hate to do.) I would suggest contacting me more than one month ahead of time if you know that you want your cap decorated, so that I can have the cap in my hands for at least one month. Remember, I cannot add anyone to my calendar without receiving both cap and payment. Please include the date you need your cap by (whether it be graduation date or the date of your graduation photos) in any inquiries. Think hard about this one because you will not be able to change the need-by date once I agree to take on your cap as an order!

Is the design on my cap permanent?

YES. You will not be able to pry this thing off! I decorate onto a very thin surface, which I then adhere to the cap in a specific way. I wrote a blog post on how I attach it here, if you're interested in learning: http://www.midwestmermaidolivia.com/2017/04/midwestmermaidart-diy-how-to-attach.html
