ESSENTIAL OILS vs FRAGRANCE OILS

We offer scent cards by request with orders. If you are curious about an essential oil blend, please send a message with your order and let us know what product scent you are interested in. If you aren’t placing an order, please do reach out to us. For a very small fee, we offer scent cards and the purchase of the scent card will be discounted from any future order you make, so you have access to free samples as well.

Please do note that ONLY essential oils are used in our products. Essential oil blends do not smell like artificial fragrance oil blends so if making the switch is new to you, please do some research to figure out what you may like in advance or contact us for recommendations. We want you to be happy and healthy. We consider helping you along the way while switching to organic an honor and will always try our best to point you in the right direction for products that fit you perfectly.

Fragrance Oils >>> Artificial fragrance blends are sweetened with artificially produced vanilla and other sugary, syrupy, sweet notes. Fruit aromas and florals are exaggerated (intensified) and the natural green earthy notes are typically left out. We do NOT use these.

Essential Oils >>> Certified organic cold pressed essential oils tend to be more green, herbaceous and can be spicy. Think rosemary, basil, fresh mint from the grocery store, orange peel, lemon peel, lime peel; how real flowers smell in person - they all have fresh greenery notes to them and you can smell the outside air, earth and rain in them.

Below is a list of essential oils commonly used in our products and the aromas you can expect from them…

Balsam Peru: Sweet, delicate, very pleasantly balsamic, warm, majestic, plush, ambery resinous, powdery, fruity vanilla with light touches of woods and cinnamon. Despite all these soft and warm notes, balsam is still very bright.

Bergamot: Like other fragrances from the citrus family, bergamot does have that classic sweet-yet-tart smell. However, bergamot also brings its own floral, spicy edge to the acidically appealing scent. It's highly fragrant.

Black Pepper: The aroma of Black Pepper Essential Oil is reminiscent to freshly ground peppercorns, but it is a bit more complex with hints of green and a bit of floral.

Cedarwood: Has balsamic undertones and a camphoraceous odor that reminds you of an heirloom hope chest or a good aftershave. This aromatic wood scent can call to mind pencil shavings and fine cigar boxes, both of which are often manufactured from cedar.

Clary Sage: A bracing herbaceous scent that smells like lavender with leathery and amber nuances and even tones of fresh tobacco. This is one of those essential oils that hits everyone different (like cilantro). For some it’s a stunning sweet greenery scent, for others it can be pungently earthy.

Coriander Seed: Sweet, herbaceous, spicy, woody and slightly fruity.

Geranium: From an entirely different genus of plant and actually has a very floral, almost rose-like scent overlaid with some herbaceous notes.

Green Mandarin: Cold pressed from the peel of unripe green fruits. It has a beautifully tangy and fresh, yet slightly bitter citrus aroma with a soft, floral (Neroli-like) undertone. Definitely not quite as sweet as red or yellow mandarin oils.

Jasmine: Has a sweet floral top note, often accompanied by a subtle but very rich woody musk.

Lavender: Floral, fresh, sweet, highly herbaceous and sometimes slightly fruity. It can be slightly camphorous.

Lemon: Very similar to fresh lemon rinds except that it is super concentrated.

Neroli: Has a light sweet-floral fragrance with an element of citrus. It is said to have a refreshing, honeyed floral aroma.

Owyhee: Very similar to Roman chamomile. Owyhee has somewhat of a peach back note. It possesses the piny, camphourous, green, herbaceous scent of the common Artemisias, yet it is much more subtle.

Peppermint: Peppermint Essential Oil smells intensely minty. Its aroma is reminiscent of peppermint candies, but it is more concentrated and is more intense in fragrance.

Petitgrain: Has a greenish woody orange smell.

Pink Grapefruit: Fresh, light, citrusy, sweet, yet slightly bitter aroma with a rather pithy note in the drydown; somewhat similar to that of Bitter Orange.

Rosemary: Rosemary Essential Oil smells fresh, herbaceous, sweet and slightly medicinal. Smells almost exactly like eucalyptus.

Sandalwood: Very woody and earthy but also balsamic with sweet and floral notes.

Sweet Orange: Citrusy and sweet. Its aroma is similar to that of orange peels, but it typically smells sweeter and is more concentrated.

Tea Tree: Medicinal, fresh, woody, earthy and herbaceous.

Violet Leaf: Cool, powerful, wet vegetal/crushed green leaves aroma with soft woody nuances; becomes muted, earthy and grassy during the long drydown.

Ylang Ylang: A deep, rich aroma that's slightly sweet and floral. It brings hints of custard, jasmine, banana, neroli (bitter orange), honey and spice. It also bears characteristics of earthiness and greenery. People with very highly defined palettes can even detect a subtle rubbery or metallic note with this essential oil.

Unity, support and strength for all people...

http://www.lesaltymermaid.etsy.com

The Salty Mermaid brand represents unity, support and strength for all people…

Janie and I met about 15 years ago at a little company we were working for back in Virginia and it was love at first sight. It was one of those instantaneous things where you totally recognize yourself in another person; just instantly with one look. We’re both odd balls. We’re both full of energy; extremely smart and analytical but also creative. We can do 15 things at the same exact time and give 100% to all 15 simultaneously and we can do it 10 times faster than the average person. So of course over the years, we’ve both run into situations where we’ve been overworked and used while sadly, also being verbally abused, underpaid and treated less than human in some situations. Between the two of us, we might possibly have one handful of people we’ve worked for that saw our potential and gave appreciation and compensation in amounts close to equal in comparison to what we give.

So here we were in Hawai’i, back in each other’s lives again all the way from the east coast after almost a two-decade span; and we had our last toss around. Both Janie and I had very successful brands in the past that still live on to this day. We decided to pack up our things, go home and hone in on the way we support and care for each other to launch a brand that can help spread that nurturing environment to other people outside of our small group.

The Salty Mermaid is a brand that represents unity for all people; every ethnicity, culture, sub-culture, gender; all personality types and even excepting, loving and the unifying the light and dark sides of ourselves. We all have dual personalities. The entire Salty Mermaid brand, the insignias, the artwork that was created here locally in Hawai’i, all represent this mass unification and support system. We think that all people should come together no matter who or what we are and just love each other for exactly who and what we are; care for each other, support, and fight for each other. No judgement: no trying to change each other. Janie and I have this saying, “the no judgement zone.” There is never any judgement with us; we take everything on with an open heart and lots of humor.

We also wanted to make sure we created a completely organic brand so we can take care of our bodies. Nothing is more infuriating then buying a product that has a colorant in it and, yeah great; it’s purple. Purple doesn’t do anything for us. But if you swap it out for ground purple sweet potato powder, all the sudden you have your color, but you also have a heavy dose of beta-carotene and a ton of anthocyanin pigments, which act as antioxidants. All the sudden your “color” helps to reduce inflammation and boosts your immune system. Purple sweet potatoes have about three times more anthocyanins than the average blueberry. I mean, how great is that!?

It’s amazing to have things that are visually attractive and smell amazing, but also energize you, tone your skin, boost your mood, purify your lymphatic system. Every single ingredient in the entire Salty Mermaid line down to the tiniest seed spec on the top of a soap, has a very particular benefit and are absolutely intentional.

We all wear many hats in our lives; we’re mothers, we’re wives, fathers, best friends, girlfriends, boyfriends – we work. We get so busy; we need to make sure that we take the time to take care of ourselves and to take care of each other. We need to come together to create strength in unity and take care of our bodies so we can be healthier, stronger, quicker and take life by the reins together.

Additional policies and FAQs
// IF YOU ARE PREGNANT OR NURSING //
If you are pregnant or nursing, ask your physician for a current list of essential oils, herbs and botanicals that you should avoid using. Our current list includes Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Ginger, Jasmine, Juniper, Lemongrass, Myrrh, Nutmeg, Peppermint, Pine, Rose, Rosemary and Sage. Please check with your physician.

// ALLERGIES - SKIN SENSITIVITIES - HOLISTIC HEALTH //
Our products are not meant to cure any types of ailments. You should never self-diagnose. If you require medical attention, please call your health care provider.

We use the highest quality products on the market, but everyone’s skin is different. I personally have an allergy to fruit so I have to avoid products with lemon, lime, etc...the purer and more natural the ingredients, the worse my reaction is because it’s pure citrus on my skin. Make sure you check our ingredients carefully to avoid purchasing products you may have a reaction to. We are not responsible for any reactions you may have. If you have any questions about specific ingredients, contact us any time and we'll be happy to help.

// TESTING //
We always suggest "Small Area Testing" products that are new to you, or have ingredients that are new to you to be sure you don't have any sensitivities, especially if you are known to have sensitive skin. Simply try the product in a small area for a few days before all over body use.

// HANDMADE //
Each and every product in this entire shop is individually designed, handmade, cut and packaged. Each and every piece is completely unique from each other making them one of a kind. Sizes are approximate estimates and due to individual handcrafting the size, color and shape will vary.

// POLICY UPDATES //
On occasion, the policies of this shop are subject to change and be updated. Any purchase from this shop is an automatic agreement to the above mentioned policies, as well as any future policy changes.

// THANK YOU //
We are so very happy and thankful that you allow our family to share our handmade creations with yours. Each and every item is created with love, thought, care and careful attention to detail. We have countless happy customers around the world. We sincerely hope you love each and every item as much as all of us do.
