About

How it Began...

I came to the Bay Area to study Book Conservation in 1995. I fell in love with the paper, the old bindings and most of all, the type. I was fortunate enough to be able to work in the Preservation Dept. at the San Francisco Public Library, and day in, day out, I studied typography on-the-job. Books from the 1700's to the turn of the (last) Century were at my disposal. By now, I had a firm grasp on how to make and take apart a book, and at this point, I was obsessed with how to print one. I found a fine printer and typographer who was willing to take me on, and thus a new obsession was born.

For the first 5 years, I created show cards and band posters, when eventually I started getting requests for wedding invitations. At this point, I hadn't ever turned on a computer. In my life!

While I still love creating and designing on-the-press, I have learned the necessary computer skills and software to do it both ways. The digital options in regard to layout and type are vast, and I'm grateful that I have my solid start in-the-hand, with real type. 14 years later, it's my personal goal to go back to this place... with a twist. My computer skills help me to adapt my sign painting and hand-lettering for use in my work, and I'm able to offer these skills to clients whenever we like.

And here we are. xo
