About

Video summary: Lil' peek at one of the many projects & patterns in my book Make and Mend.

What the heck is a Miniature Rhino?

Hi I’m Jessica Marquez, a lifelong maker who found her way back to hands-on making , mainly in textiles, while working on an MFA in Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. After countless hours working digitally, retouching images and staring at a computer screen I longed for the experience of physical, analog making. Through books purchased at library sale I taught myself embroidery and then never stopped stitching.

In 2008, while working a full time job that didn’t fulfill me, I started a creative handmade business (this very business!), Miniature Rhino, named after a young cousin's imaginary friend, a dentist she called Dr. Rhino. At first, it was just a place to play and be creative in my spare time, but I found myself pouring all my energy into it. Miniature Rhino became a symbol of creativity and imagination and seeks to inspire and teach hands-on skills through a line of embroidery kits, patterns, classes and books.

Now, Miniature Rhino is my full time job. I design patterns, create kits, teach classes, write and photograph DIY projects, and have authored two books- Make and Mend (Ten Speed, 2018) and Stitched Gifts (Chronicle, 2012). I sell my work in my online and to retails shops across the country and internationally. I also teach throughout the country, internationally and online through Bluprint (formerly Craftsy) classes in embroidery and photography. My work has been featured in many publications including, Grace Bonney's bestselling book, In the Company of Women, Real Simple, Bust, Country Living, and InStyle magazine.
