About mirela

Welcome to my Etsy Store!

My name is Mirela and I've been sewing since I was 12. I will be forever grateful for my mother for instilling in my the love for sewing. It is intriguing to me to see a flat piece of fabric take shape from a pattern and sewing the pieces together to see the end result is exciting.

I recently discovered a love for ceramics and silversmithing. My grandparents both worked in a porcelain factory, Iris, in my home town of Cluj, Romania. Both my parents worked in a tile and ceramics factory, Sanex. So, this might run through my veins , because I cannot stop playing with clay.

When my daughter was in preschool, 3 years ago, during a school art expo Off the Canvas, the local ceramics studio came over with a pottery wheel and we went back to the community studio for classes. I took the 8 week class, a year later I took another 4 weeks advanced session. I started making casseroles and larger bowls, painted plates.

Silversmithing and soldering have always been intriguing, and I have been very lucky to find a local studio with amazing teachers, so every now and then you will find enameled copper, or set stone silver jewelry pieces in my store.

The local studio had a barely used kiln for sale, my husband and my dad set up the electrical work for it, I cleared and organized the garage and I've setup a home studio, making limited, unique items in my spare time.

The Process:
It starts as a lump of clay, wedged and turned into a ball shape, thrown on the wheel, dried to leather hard, trimmed on the wheel and decorated, fired in a kiln at over 1900F, sandpapered smooth, dusted, glazed, re-fired in a kiln at 2170F. The process takes weeks for me to finish.
For ceramic pendants, broaches, rings, I use plaster molds, slip cast the porcelain, drain it, wait for it to harden, clean and decorate, the pieces go through bisque and then glaze firings in a kiln.

Here you will find some for sale.
