Quirky little animal character gifts to make you smile!
***** At the moment the animal characters are all soft sculpture paperweights, but I am working on patterns and instructions for you to make them yourself as nothing beats a handmade gift that is filled with your love and care. *****
Hi! I’m Laura Mirjami, a Finnish born designer maker now living in the UK, and I believe that the best gifts are those that make you smile. If you agree with me you’ve come to the right place as I can assure you from my six years journey of designing and making Bilberry Woods characters that the most reoccurring feedback is that the animal characters can make even the most serious person smile.
Bilberry Woods characters all a bit of nonsense really – after all who really needs a paperweight these days? But they are so much more than paperweights as they often become trusted little companions on the desk or good luck charms. They all also have their likes and dislikes, which I include with every animal to read about and they all have great stories to tell too (which I am currently writing into a collection of short stories – Tales of Bilberry Woods). Also, as I use all the years of experience in making from my art restoration and reupholstery days, I can assure you that the little animals are made to last for a lifetime, hopefully becoming beloved heirlooms.
Also, the great news is that once you give one animal as a gift the likely hood is that the recipient wants more and as there are 25 animals to choose from you can rest in piece knowing that at least one person’s gifts are sorted out for the next Birthday and Christmas!
I draw a lot of my inspiration from my childhood in Finland and the whole of Scandinavia. I just love the clean Nordic lines and seemingly simple forms. Like the great Danish designer Kay Bojensen once said: “lines need to smile” as he was creating wooden toys that he wanted to be round, soft and have a good feel to them and that is what I am hoping to achieve with my work.
And there are other designers/brands dear to my heart too, some that have been a big part of my childhood and to name a few: Marimekko, IIttala and Alvar Aalto. And then last, but not least there are two remarkable women that I try to live up to every day: Margaret Steiff who’s legacy in teddy bears and other soft toys in this world is beyond believe and Beatrix Potter who must be my biggest hero of all time.
And then there is MAGIC that I just have to mention. I truly believe that if you let your imagination run free and never accept the world for what you just hear or see, you’ll discover how everything truly comes alive. Lewis Carroll once wrote: “Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality” and lets face it, sometimes reality is harsh and I think that we all need a bit of magic and quirky little things in our lives that will inspire us and delight us.
I created Mirjami Design in 2009 and since then I've designed and made thousands of handmade items some of which have been sold in Liberty in London and Colette in Paris, but where ever my items are sold I'm happy if they make you happy :)
