About

About My Shop and My Process

I don’t think that art should just be reserved for museum walls, too expensive or obtuse to be enjoyed broadly. I think art should also grace the walls of a child’s room or a couple’s living room, and bring a chuckle, a smile, or a contemplation to everyday life.

Here in my shop, you will find works ranging from ready to hang, framed oil paintings to affordable museum quality prints.

OIL
The original oil paintings in my shop are painted by me, either in my studio or outside alla plein air. I paint with oil on canvas in the alla prima style, which is essentially working quickly, typically in one or two sessions, layering wet paint upon wet paint. This fast approach helps me capture the movement of the natural world. I paint with both brushes and palette knifes to express my vision, using paint so thickly that you can see my strokes, a technique referred to as impasto. The oil paintings in my shop are varnished, framed and ready to hang.

GOUACHE
Animals are beautiful, whimsical, and speak to us at all ages. My original animal portraits, painted using gouache, present each animal with its own foibles and charms: not every cat would want to wear a waistcoat and tie! As I create each character, I imagine details about his or her life: the grizzly bear is on a picnic, confounded by ants that have gotten into her jam; the salmon is wearing her best gown and contentedly going stag to the evening’s soiree.

My gouache paintings are blood, sweat, and tears, one-of-a-kind originals created by my hands. I only paint a few portraits each year, making these paintings very rare and special items. Each painting is truly unique, for as beautiful as my giclee prints are they cannot replicate exactly the true intended colors and level of detail present in the original painting.

PRINTS
The animal prints in my shop are museum quality reproductions of my original gouache paintings, designed by me to be accessible, fun and affordable works of art. The animals are printed using archival ink on archival paper, and the quality is so high that many people, including my professional artist friends, cannot tell the difference between the original painting and print!
