Lois has been so generous with her knowledge, skill, and materials! She clearly knows her stuff historically, worked with me to accommodate a deadline, and also sent me some wool and a cute little pouch for my whorls! I’ve been having so much fun learning how to spin on my drop spindle, which was beautifully crafted. I highly recommend this shop!

About

Spinsters in Need! Putting Historical Spindles into the Hands of Curious Spinsters

I'm an Independent Researcher who loves recreating yarn and textiles 'old style'. 15 years ago, I couldn't find the right medieval spindle to spin on. It was missing! I began making re-created historical spindles & whorls for myself and my students. I enjoy hand turning and hand carving recycled wood, squishing clay, and looking for just the right rock to help my textile research whirl from book page to hand. Etsy helps me get these historically-inspired spindles and whorls into the hands of spinster re-enactors, demonstrators, and teachers. I've created instructional videos for spinsters unfamiliar with the removable whorl to help use Viking and medieval spindles. Click on "Shop Website" to go to my missingspindle Youtube videos or search YouTube directly for 'missingspindle'.

As I continue to make a variety of historically-based wooden spindle sticks and mate them with removable whorls in many different weights and shapes, I am learning more and more about what ancient spinsters experienced as they spun wool (and flax) from early childhood until their old age. My students and customers help in this research by bravely trying these copies of ancient styles and giving feedback on their reactions and insights on these textile tools. The bottom line: sometimes the Medieval Way is the Best Way!!!!!!!!
