Missive Letterpress & Design

MISSIVE is a San Francisco Bay Area letterpress studio founded by designer Lisa Willis in 2008, when a creative outlet became a passion. With a mission to bring stylish correspondence to mailboxes everywhere, the offerings have expanded to include greeting cards, social stationery, announcements and more.

Each piece is hand-printed on vintage presses, using luxurious cotton and recycled content papers. With a less-is-more aesthetic and a focus on elegant letterforms, vintage imagery and classic design, our collection of charming letterpress cards and social stationery is intended to delight both the writer and the recipient.

Why Missive? Missive is an old word, dating from the 15th century. From its etymology in Medieval Latin "mittere"—to send—it has come to mean a note or written message and evokes both intrigue and romance, a fitting term for the art of letterpress.

All of our letterpress goods are hand-printed on one of our vintage platen presses. We print mostly on reclaimed cotton papers, that are not only beautiful, but sustainable. Please read the FAQs section for more information about this centuries old printing process.

About letterpress:
Letterpress has a lovely tactile quality, unique from any other printing method. For those unfamiliar with the process of letterpress printing, a raised printing plate is inked and then an impression is made on paper, resulting in a relief image. Due to the hand-printed process, there may be subtle variations in ink coverage, impression and/or registration, unmistakable characteristics which lend charm and authenticity to the printed piece.
