Welcome to MJ Originals! My goal is to provide you with high quality mittens made from wonderful repurposed wool.

The wool sweaters used to make the mittens have been selected because they have some condition that classifies them as "non-wearable". In most cases the sweaters have a snag (whoops) or have been accidentally washed and dried in the washing machine and shrunk down to a size that would only fit a very small child (double whoops).

Each repurposed sweater is washed in very hot water before being cut and sewn into mittens.

Great care is taken to use as much of the sweater as possible, and the highest quality sewing techniques are employed at all times. My philosophy is: What is the use of saving a sweater unless you are going to make a high quality, long lasting product out of it?

Wool is a wonderful material for mittens because it has a natural ability to insulate as well as shed water. Wool is also a very durable fabric that will last for years.

Worried about cleaning your wool mittens? Wool is easy to clean because the nature of the wool fiber causes dirt to to sit on top of the fiber and be easily wiped away.

If you do want to wash your mittens, gently wash them by hand and lay flat to dry. Pull the fleece lining to the outside to encourage faster drying.

Additional policies and FAQs

Are these mittens warm?
They most certainly are! I grew up in cold country and understand the value of keeping warm in even the most brutal conditions. That's why I use wool, which is an excellent insulator, along with a very high quality polar fleece lining. I recently wore a pair of these mittens to the watch an outdoor football game in December (at The Frozen Tundra, no less) and by the end of the game my hands were still toasty warm!

Do you have another...?
Many people see an item that they like that has already sold and want to know if I can make another just like it. Because I use recycled materials, these mittens are truly unique - it is very hard to find another sweater exactly the same and make similar mittens! However, I do often make several pairs of mittens from the same sweater, so I might be able to hook you up with something similar.

How do you determine the different sizes?
In the name of good recycling, I try to find a useful purpose for every bit of sweater. The best way to do this is to cut different sizes. The sizes are determined by how I can best use the sweater. I've done a lot of work on sizing to make sure that they are appropriate for the age group listed. Good fit is incredibly important!

The stripes?
Every effort is made to match the stripes evenly across each mitten. However, sometimes different parts of the sweater shrink at slightly different rates which results in some unevenness in the pattern or stripe between the two mittens. This is one of the challenges of working with recycled materials! I work very hard to match the stripes across the mittens, but keeping the mittens the same size takes precedence.

I love to do custom orders! Please contact me with any special requests.
Have you accidentally washed one of your own wool sweaters and shrunk it? Did you fall in love with a wool sweater at a local thrift shop? Do want to make family heirlooms from a special sweater from a relative that has passed? I can make accommodations for all these situations and more!

Wholesale orders are very welcome. Please contact me for details and a price sheet.

I also love to trade!
