About

Modernpoetry is an anthology of 19th- and 20th-century culture, collected by my brilliant mom over a lifetime of midwestern thrift shopping.

Each object is a little poem, although some are more T.S. Eliot and others are more "The Oscar Mayer Wiener Song." Find one that is the poem your heart sings and let me send it home to live with you.

I grew up playing on the floor of the Goodwill and the St. Vincent de Paul's in South Bend, Indiana, as my mom prowled the aisles searching for wonderful things long before retro was chic. She had an uncanny ability to spot the treasure that was hidden to the rest of us, dragging home shabby furniture to refinish or squirreling away old lunch boxes when we all thought she was crazy. She taught me to love objects that come with a history, marvelous things that conceal a secret story that must be discovered or invented.

Eventually she turned her hobby into a small business, and for thirty years she managed two "Cats on the Cupboard" locations in antique malls in southwest Michigan. Since she passed away, I have tried my best to step into her shoes. I'm so pleased to be able to find Forever Homes for all her beloved objects, and I hope that you will find something at modernpoetry that will delight you as much as it did Mom when she first rescued it from a rummage sale or thrift store.

ON MODERN POETRY

The poem of the mind in the act of finding
What will suffice. It has not always had
To find: the scene was set; it repeated what
Was in the script.
Then the theatre was changed
To something else. Its past was a souvenir.

It has to be living, to learn the speech of the place.
It has to face the men of the time and to meet
The women of the time. It has to think about war
And it has to find what will suffice. It has
To construct a new stage. It has to be on that stage,
And, like an insatiable actor, slowly and
With meditation, speak words that in the ear,
In the delicatest ear of the mind, repeat,
Exactly, that which it wants to hear, at the sound
Of which, an invisible audience listens,
Not to the play, but to itself, expressed
In an emotion as of two people, as of two
Emotions becoming one. The actor is
A metaphysician in the dark, twanging
An instrument, twanging a wiry string that gives
Sounds passing through sudden rightnesses, wholly
Containing the mind, below which it cannot descend,
Beyond which it has no will to rise.
It must
Be the finding of a satisfaction, and may
Be of a man skating, a woman dancing, a woman
Combing. The poem of the act of the mind.

Payment
I accept credit cards, Etsy gift cards, PaylPal, money orders, and personal checks. I also accept international bank transfers, but must add an additional transaction fee changed by my bank. Please send me a message if you'd like to arrange a bank transfer.

Please pay as soon as possible after your order. After seven days of non-payment I will have to cancel the transaction and re-list the item, so please let me know if you are having problems with payment.

International buyers are welcome! Please note that you are responsible for any duties and customs charges.
Shipping
►SHIPPING DELAY: I am so sorry, but I will not be able to ship until Monday, October 3. I will send your item right away then, and I apologize for the inconvenience! If this won't work for you, please just let me know--I can cancel the sale and refund your money if necessary, with my sincere apologies. ◄

I do my best to ship by the next business day after receiving your payment, generally using USPS First Class Mail with delivery confirmation. Heavier items must ship by Priority Mall or Parcel Select in the US, and books may travel by Media Mail in the US. You may be able to select a shipping upgrade during the checkout process, but you don't see what you need, please drop me a line!

Priority Mail fees are based on shipping to California, but if you live closer to Michigan, write me with your zip code and I can figure the cost for you. We may be able to save you some money!

I am happy to combine shipping on multiple items from my shop and refund any savings to you. Again, just send me a message if you'd like to me estimate this for you.

Insurance is recommended on expensive items. It is included up to $100 when shipping by Priority Mail in the US. Please contact me if you want insurance or a shipping upgrade for any item and I'll send you a revised invoice.

All items will be very carefully packed. I am an expert shipper with years of experience!

I do not assume responsibility for items lost or damaged by the carrier, but will work to resolve any mailing difficulties that I can.
Refunds and Exchanges
I hope you will love your modernpoetry item, but I will accept returns, in good condition, if they are postmarked up to seven days from the time the item was delivered to you. I will refund your purchase price plus the original shipping, but not your return shipping.
