Announcement   Yay science!

After a long hiatus, we are slowly setting up shop again -- stay tuned for more exciting additions to our geekery!

Here you'll find hand-made geeky jewelry and gifts that celebrate math and science, from art prints to coasters and picture frames. Our designs span science, including petri dishes and DNA, spelling words with amino acids and the periodic table, earthquake seismograms, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Whether it's biology, chemistry, math, or physics, we've got something for you.

Molarchae's BOOK collection melds together our love of science, creativity, and reuse. Science is an ever-evolving body of knowledge, and as a result, many older books are almost laughably outdated. We rescue books that are past their informative and/or physical prime and give them a new life with the help of a laser cutter and a lot of love. Because every old book has history and character, each piece is guaranteed unique. The laser etching removes the top layer of the cover to reveal the fabric or chip board underneath, resulting in a two-tone effect. Many of these books also have truly fantastic cover designs that we wanted to give a better life than sitting on a shelf--and so BOOK was born.

Molarchae: molecular + archaeology, the study of molecules (DNA, RNA, protein, etc.) in old, preserved specimens. For example: bit.ly/gCj6oG

About

Yay science!

As one of my favorite little prints proclaims...

Science! It's awesome.

I'm a scientist through and through, even as an artist. It's no surprise then that my little shop here is so completely infused with science goodies. Shortly after starting graduate school, I realized I needed a hobby that would let me flex my creative muscles more regularly than the odd project here and there.

After dabbling in letterpress for awhile, I discovered the magic (nay, science!) of laser cutters. Having spent years collecting old science books with interesting covers, I realized they would be a fantastic medium for laser cutting. So many old covers have amazing designs that deserve more attention than sitting on a shelf, and my picture frames (and soon clocks) try to retain their amazing character while making them functional and beautiful. For laser etched jewelry, the laser obliterates the top layer of a book cover and the material underneath is exposed, creating textured, two-tone effects.

I try to find books that are long past their informative utility (science books from the 50's and 60's are laughable in many cases), or falling apart. Many of the books are literally saved from going to the dump. I have great respect for the value of books, while still recognizing that not every old book may have an informative place in today's technology-driven society.

Ultimately, I want to bring my passion for science and science-inspired gifts to as many people as I can. Enjoy!

For the curious, molarchae is pronounced like malarkey, and comes from an abbreviation for MOLecular ARCHAEology, the type of science I did in years past.
