Inspired by a Molecular Muse

While living in the heartbreak of a ended relationship, I wanted to know why I felt so bad. I searched for answers in books about neurotransmitters and learned about the molecules responsible for our moods and drives. While half-asleep, staring at a page, I thought: wouldn't serotonin make a pretty necklace? The idea of having a reminder that happiness is created from the actions of neurotransmitters in my head appealed to me. After an unsuccessful search online for any molecule necklaces, I decided that I needed to learn to make my own.

While wearing my serotonin necklace, I received many suggestions that I should make them to sell. At the time I was training to be a science communicator and selling jewelry was not in my radar view. It was an experience in a GAP store at the mall, where a teenager asked me to explain the meaning of my serotonin necklace, that I realized that mt serotonin necklace is science communication. I began to make other molecules that I found to be beautiful and inspiring. In 2005, I created Made With Molecules.

I've found that my jewelry fills a few niches. It is perfect for science-philes, like me, who want symbols of ideas, concepts, or emotions in a molecular language. It also appeals to people who aren't necessarily hard-core-science-geeks, who appreciate the shapes and the meanings. My jewelry is also perfect for scientists to give as gifts, sharing a bit of their love of science in a shiny, user-friendly form.
