I accidentally ordered the collars, when I meant to order the bandanas. Seller has been very gracious and accepted the collars in return and is sending me some bandanas. Collars were very well made so if that is what you are looking for I would recommend them. Can't wait for the bandanas :)

About

Artist Statement

I began my career in 1989, as a Registered Nurse. This is only relevant because I have noticed that nurses think they can do anything. I found that I too, look at things and think, I can do that. This did not come to me right away. It took over 2 decades to get to this place. Before 2011, I did not sew or craft. If I needed something, I went to the store and bought it. My husband Chris would tease, that I couldn't even sew a button on a garment.

In 2008, three English Springer Spaniel puppies came into my life. When searching those large chain pet stores, I noticed several things. Nothing was made in this country and everything looked the same. I also needed affordable products. After all, I had 3 dogs. I have always tried to purchase local or American made. Over the years this has become more difficult to accomplish. So, out of necessity, I taught myself how to make collars and leashes. I purchased a Bernina embroidery machine, and off I went.

My newest designs got noticed by a local dog store and bakery, Dogs in Harmony, located in Johnston, RI. That led to selling my products at the store. I attended the Providence open market, and got my feet wet selling my products. I learned about taxes, permits and licenses. Next up, my daughter suggested, I apply to The Historic New England Roseland Cottage Fair. I had always attended this artisan fair, that is located in Woodstock, Ct, but only as a consumer. I thought it was a long shot, but I gave it a try and was accepted. With my daughter Sarah’s help the Roseland Cottage Fair was a huge success for my small home based business.

Early in 2012 there were several dog treat recalls. Denise Holmes of Dogs in Harmony could no longer get dehydrated sweet potato treats. So once again, I thought, I can make these. Well again I learned, not so easy. It takes approximately 40 pounds of raw sweet potatoes to make 5-7 pounds of dehydrated treats. My sweet potatoes are all organic. I purchase the sweet potatoes from local New England farmers, when in season and southern states when not. They are grain free, low fat, and great for diabetic dogs. My treats are registered with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management/Division of Agriculture.

Mona Lucy Design was featured in RI Local magazine.

I love working with great textiles. Custom work is my favorite. I had a bride that requested a collar, bow tie and leash combo set, that would match her bridesmaids dresses. Another bride requested a tutu for her dog Isis, that would be in her wedding. I have sold my products in the USA and Canada.

I continue to work as a nurse but love coming home to create new products.
