About Morbiditee

Sales 501
On Etsy since 2016

Sports were the after-school activity in my small town. I had no interest in football (and my interest in wrestling wasn't for reasons the town would have appreciated) so I got a job instead. My mother was the manager of a Sonic Drive-In where, at thirteen, I hustled burgers on nights and weekends to earn money to buy clothes—something other than the elephant-eared bell-bottom pants she'd already bought me.

I saved paychecks and made the first of many trips to the sprawling upscale shopping mall of a neighboring town. There, I found stacks of the shirts and pants that made the luckiest kids in my school something the rest of us envied, I bought a sackfull. The next morning I was newly made-over in the best jeans and sherbet colored polo shirt a fast-food paycheck could buy, I entered homeroom as Honey Boo Boo would a spotlit stage.

I don't remember their names but I remember their faces, as one boy looked at me and then grinned at another, then a girl whispered something to her friend. My jeans, it seems, were too tight, and my polo shirts were the wrong brand, and Ms Lutz's english class had seen through my pastel cotton and blue denim charade.

I made a few more trips to the city mall, trying to correct my miscalculations, but eventually surrendered to the obvious: that I wasn’t one of them and was never going to be. Still, my trips weren’t wasted. I’d sometimes see peculiar pockets of city kids who had styles that had nothing to do with the singular style of my hometown. They weren’t wearing the boat shoe and popped collar uniforms of the preppy youth I'd hoped to emulate, these kids each had their own things going on—no two looked alike. They loitered outside diners and coffee shops and record stores, with brightly colored hair and madly styled and restyled thrift store finds. A boy wore his granny coat with gold metallic leggings—the leggings under fishnet stockings. A girl wore fuscia gloves and a pea green leotard beneath her exhuberantly draped home-sewn wool and burlap skirt. Someone sat on the curb wearing someone else’s discarded prom gown, eating a bag of french fries.

These kids weren’t worried about fitting in, they were exotic tropical fish and they had no interest in swimming with schools of carp. If style mattered, they understood why. And if I was going to belong somewhere, it was going to be with them—the Blue Face Angelfish and the Half Moon Betta.

And if you're shopping on Etsy then I bet you're a bit of a Siamese Combtail or a Mandarin Goby yourself, welcome to my store.

And PS… after you’ve bought our Siouxsie t-shirt, buy our band’s cover of "Spellbound" (Werewuss on iTunes!)
