About MorningDoveDesign

Sales 1,285
On Etsy since 2008

Color, texture, design, unique: most designs handmade by Helena Nelson - Reed

Selling on Etsy allows me to reach a global market, rather than one limited to my geographic region, or those who know my name. Thanks to Etsy, my work now sells to clients and galleries located in places as diverse as Abu Dabi, Dubai, Russia, the EU and UK, Finland, Iceland, Congo Basin and Kyoto. Etsy allows people in distant places to meet in a common cyber - market place.

Through Etsy I've been built my business one bead at a time to a sustainable level via private label clients and online sales. Designing and selling necklaces is different from selling my art, and I enjoy the marketplace atmosphere as well as some nice partnerships and friendships that have resulted.

My husband is supportive of my work. While not interested in beads or necklaces, he helps out in many ways. Shipping and receiving, filling out customs forms, packaging unwieldy items, and teaching me how to use tools for metalwork are just a few examples that make a big difference to somebody running a micro business, like moi!

  • Helena

    Owner, Designer, Customer Service

I'm an independent designer/artist best known for my watercolor paintings. I enjoy working with beads because of their tactile, often sculptural natures. The bead & craft community is full of wonderful people from all over the world.

  • Osio Brown Editions

    Elmhurst, IL

A local gallery specializing in creating fine art giclee for artists and photographers. Artist owned, small local business, great service and professional results. Osio Brown scans my original art, and prints my giclee.

  • Unknown artisans living around the globe, now and historically

    Earth, TX

The world over, artisans live in quiet anonymity, often modestly, crafting works of varying types, materials and quality. They create beads and pendants of many kinds that I could never reproduce, often an entire necklace is inspired by the materials.

Shipping

Yes, I combine shipping, let me know what items and Ill adjust it for you.

1. When feasible, items are now First Class Mail, wrapped using all recycled materials, carefully packaged but sans extra luxury touches contributing weight and dimension to shipping fees and cost of the item itself. FRAGILE OR RARE ITEMS ARE NOW SHIPPED PRIORITY MAIL IN THE RARE INSTANCE BUYERS NEED TO USE THE INSURANCE...ya, I know First Class Mail also offers insurance but Priority insurance is quicker and easier to use when making claims, and usually pays just as promised (in my experience) .

2. I ship internationally, so email if your country isn't listed as a destination.

NOTE > International shipments can be mailed Priority International or First Class Mail. 1st class takes longer because of multiple stops & being scanned, then moved from one shipping conveyance to another at various sorting facilities while enroute. This slightly increases the risk of damage and loss

Priority International has a tracking number, but not all countries scan packages. You may prefer regular First Class International mail for lower priced items but for anything over $100.00 USD I recommend Priority, for insurance reasons.

3. INSURANCE: This is the buyer's responsibility. My personal experience is that its easier to collect insurance claims from Priority Mail, compared to claims placed with First Class Mail, although both methods now have tracking.

4. DAMAGED AND LOST GOODS: I wrap everything as if its being tossed from a 5th story window, but there's no way of controlling what happens to shipments once launched into the swirling maelstrom known as the USPO and International Mails.

Priority, Express & First Class Mail have tracking numbers and track shipments to the buyer's doorstep, with a photo. I'll share tracking information, dates or address information. In some cases I've worked with my local post office manager to track a customer's lost shipments...there are wonderful new tools for finding lost packages!

Please don't insist that somehow its my fault if a delivered package was mistakenly taken by a neighbor, stolen from the front porch or an apartment mail room.

5. NO CUSTOM ORDERS. This policy is due to people changing their minds well into the creation period, and expecting a full refund despite the fact policies are stated clearly.. Sheesh! The frequent excuse that an artist/designer/shop owner should grant a full refund on custom work because they can 'always sell it to somebody else, or wear it themselves, so its not a big deal' doesn't pay the bills.

Additional policies and FAQs

Sorry, buy I don't alter or repair the creations of other designers and sellers, nor repair broken vintage jewelry.

This shop accepts Direct Checkout (credit card) and Paypal, so you can still pay by installment...just to the credit card provider instead of me.

DISCOUNT CODES:
I price my creations fairly. Because I haven't the costs associated with brick & mortar stores, traveling the art & bead show circuit, or paying staff and assistants, some of my goods may be priced less than comparable items offered on Etsy. Talent, ideas, work, time and materials are worth A FAIR WAGE. There's no underpaid assembly line churning out necklaces. Only me, designing and constructing them one at a time

LOW BALLING. If I don't respond to an offer, that's why. Increased Etsy, Paypal and credit card fees, state taxes, and international tariffs all take a share in profits.

ARTIST'S RANT: I gotta say it....
I can offer discounts the way other sellers do, by increasing my prices 20% across the board, then offering an ascending discount code system or bimonthly sales so buyers think they're getting a special deal. However, I believe my customers recognize antiquated marketing gimmicks when they see them.

Anyone thinking that what they pay a teenage sitter is also fair wage for a skilled artists, artisans, and craftsman, is wrong. Period.

SALES: In fairness to customers I rarely have sales, but have added "Going going gone and Clearance categories. Some years I don't even do this.

The reason for not having sales is that A. My pricing is already more than fair. My clients needn't worry that the item they purchased could have been purchased for less if they'd only have waited for the sale.
