About

Accidentally successful

Painting and drawing brings me so much joy. Even if I can only find ten minutes to paint in the course of my day, it is worth it to me. I started creating children's illustrations when my oldest son was born - I needed some nursery art for his room, and didn't want to spend big money. I painted "Jungle Baby," "Bear Baby," and "Forest Baby" for him. Several of my friends asked me to make copies for them, so they could give the prints to their friend(s) as baby shower gifts. Finally one friend suggested I open an Etsy shop.

My first "Jungle Baby" print sold within minutes of listing it - I was so surprised (and honestly a little scared, because I hadn't yet learned how to use all of Etsy's seller features).

For several years, I just sold prints of my three nursery paintings, with a brief detour into custom cookie cutters (successful, but too work intensive!). Then in 2011 we began the process of adopting a daughter from Ethiopia, and I discovered that there really isn't a whole lot of ethnically diverse children's art out there. I want our daughter to grow up seeing art that represents her, and that represents our family. I began painting for her. Any time I think about her, I begin sketching and dreaming up new paintings.

When my multicultural and adoption themed art (prints and originals) began selling just about as quickly as I could produce them, my husband and I had the idea to use my Etsy income as a fundraiser for our adoption (yes, adoption is expensive!). I am blown away by people's generosity. As of April 2012, we have been fully funded for our adoption. Now, 20% of my Etsy income goes towards buying formula and diapers and other supplies for the orphanages in Ethiopia. We will bring those things over when we travel to meet our daughter.

Did you know that each of my paintings tells a little story? Take for example my top seller has been "Hair Time." This set of 3 paintings that celebrate African (or African American) hair came into being after my friend taught me how to care for and braid kinky curly hair. I loved every moment of it - but it definitely took time! In the middle of styling, her daughter took a break and walked around our house with half of her head in braids, half of her hair still free and curly. I thought it was so cute, it inspired this little set of paintings!

People who loved my little girl art began to ask me to paint little boy art, too. Then I started getting requests for custom paintings - these have been keeping me so busy, and I am having so much fun! Right now I am not accepting new clients for custom paintings, but will most likely in 2013 again.

I feel so honored and humbled that my art has been welcomed into so many homes in the USA, and in other countries, too! I have really enjoyed the interactions with my customers, and especially love it when other families share their hair adventures and inspirations, and their adoption stories with me. Thank you!

In the midst of my busy life, painting is my little island of peace and tranquility. My 2 little boys inspire my art every day. We are also in the process of adopting a daughter from Ethiopia, so as I wait for her, dream of her, I paint for her.
