I Sell Dead People's ... Stuff

I have a lot of experience browsing and buying stuff on Etsy. As a Buyer, there are certain things that I love and certain things that drive me nuts about Sellers and their shops. My aim is to emulate the things I've seen other Sellers do that I like and correct the things I've seen Sellers do that I think is not Buyer-friendly. One of those things is the air of credibility that Etsy indirectly confers on Sellers and you would be surprised at the number of Sellers that have no clue what they are selling. This is not to say that they are dishonest but copying information from someone else’s listing or from replacements.com is not credible information. I want my Shop to be a place you visit not just for the Junk I'm selling but because you can trust my descriptions, you can feel securing in purchasing from me, and you'll learn a thing or two about what the item is.

So how I want to set my Shop apart from many of the others:

* I try to research everything I'm selling, and I aim to impart at least one nugget of information about the item you might be purchasing. If I can't identify the item, I will state that in the description, but I am no expert. Too many Sellers have no clue what they are selling and some will even make things up to close the sale. Just because it looks like Murano glass does not mean it is Murano glass. All iridescent glass is not carnival glass!
* Whether you purchased from me or not, I want you to leave having learned something about that vintage item. The Shops that did this were the ones I found I constantly visited. This told me the Seller really knew what they were selling and not just copying someone else's listing. I could trust those Sellers that if they said it was Danish rosewood” that it actually was.
* I will do my best to describe the dimensions and condition of the item. One of the first items I purchased was a vintage glass pitcher which I thought we could use for juice in the morning. The Seller did not list dimensions and I did not think to ask. I keep it as a symbol of my online buying mistake. Truthfully I still make it from time to time but not as much as I first did. I try to always have a size relationship shot in my photos but sometimes I forget... or I can’t find my Sharpie.
* I will always try to save you as much money as possible. You don't have to ask me to combine shipping (unless you made purchases as separate orders). I will always refund you any shipping savings, even if I overestimated. If I underestimated the shipping costs, I will absorb those.
* I will not harass you to leave me a rating. It is important for Sellers apparently to have a high rating, but it bugged me when Sellers constantly messaged me to leave them a rating. If you feel so inclined, please do so.
* The things in my Shop are things that I like myself. I figured if I'm stuck with the item, I better like it. So the Junk you'll find mostly in my Shop is predominantly mid-century with some from the early and late 20th as well. The Junk I have become obsessed with is: glassware (carnival, depression, art, cased), mid-century dinnerware, mid-century art pottery, mid-century modern design.
* I am happy to talk to you about anything in my shop. I have a lot of Junk that I just haven't gotten around to posting. So I might have what you're looking for or I might be able to make some suggestions of what might be out there. I've given several customers suggestions on mid-century dinnerware patterns that I don't have already.

This is not my full-time job. I have a rather busy day job that is completely unrelated to this. This is completely a hobby with no real intentions of getting rich. If I can find good homes for this Junk, make a little money, and definitely not lose money, then I'm a happy camper. Getting to this point has already cost me a lot more than I was willing to pay. Sometimes you don't realize how much things cost until they are gone and you can't get it back.

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, come visit us at our new endeavor. We are now renting space in Antiques Unlimited in San Carlos. Our space is at the back of the store, look for the mid-century wares and the Egyptian statue. I call him Nuby.

This journey started when I needed to fix my cracked bathroom mirror. Down the Etsy rabbit hole I fell and along the way I've discovered some things about myself and about other people. This journey isn't yet over. And that mirror is still cracked.

Frequently asked questions

Shipping Charges

I do my best to figure out the shipping charges to the best of my ability. As a long time buyer, I know how frustrating the shipping charges can be when you get your heart set on an item and the price it will cost you. This is why I've elected to join Etsy's Free Shipping Guarantee. If your order is under $35 and you are paying for shipping, I will refund you any difference between what my estimate was and the actual shipping cost. Etsy only allows us to calculate shipping costs at USPS rates so I will quote out the various carries to find the cheapest ship means to get your purchase safely to you. More often than not the lowest shipping cost that insures the contents is UPS Ground so transit time may end up being longer than quoted.

Consolidating Orders

I will absolutely consolidate your order to the best of my ability. Having done it myself, I know what an additional incentive it is to buy multiple items from a single shop in order to save on shipping charges. And of course, I want you to do the same to me.

But let me also remind you that I have free shipping for orders over $35. If you are wondering about order consolidation and still below $35, you are leaving money on the table. You should think of it as free credit that is good only for this transaction. Use it or lose it!

Item Descriptions

I write really long descriptions. This is very much to my detriment because it means I can only get listings up so fast. But it is important to me to teach you a little something about what you are purchasing. I rarely sell anything that I haven't clearly identified.

I also do my best to inspect each item that I put up for sale in my Shop, and describe any damage or flaws to you. There's nothing more disheartening than getting something home only to discover damage that was cleverly hidden. I will never place the obligation on you to inspect my photos to inform you of the condition.

Product Summary

As I state in the About section, I want you to leave my Shop knowing more about what you looked at (and hopefully bought) than before you clicked on something. And hopefully this brings you back for return visit. I realize that means I can be very wordy in my descriptions so I've added a summary at the top - the critical stuff I know buyers want to know - Dimensions and Condition.

I will do my best to summarize both in the Product Summary at the top and provide more detail in the description. For specifics on condition categories see "Condition Categories" in this FAQ.

Condition Categories

What the condition descriptors mean to me:

Excellent Vintage Condition: The item is near mint. It is as if no one over the years ever used it.

Great Vintage Shape: The item has a slight amount of wear from minor use over the year.

Very Good Vintage Shape: Item has noticeable wear or not noticeable damage.

Good Vintage Shape: The item has more than one instance of damage but is still functional and may still be appealing to the right person or collector.

Poor Vintage Shape: The item has so much damage that it wouldn't be of much use to anyone. It's probably in my Shop for some other purpose.

Returns

I do my best to describe the item in my description, and I do my best to examine each piece before listing it. And you can rest assured that I stand by my descriptions. It has happened where I did not notice some damager or it suffered some damage during storage. I will always notify you if I discover this while packaging. I have had occasion where the piece arrived with undisclosed damage. I will always make it right and then some. Each time we ship a vintage item, no matter how well we pack, there is a chance of damage. And it is time consuming on both our parts. It's for that reason my sales are final. If there is an issue, always talk to me first. If I am at fault I will always make it right.

Expedited Shipping & Shipping Upgrades

I do not take shipping upgrades or expedited shipping requests. Like you and probably the reason why you need expedited shipping, I too often leave things to the last minute. Between my day job and this vintage side business, I can not always move things asie to expedite an order. If you inform me ahead of time I can let you know what my time currently allows for and advise on whether your timeline is feasible. But I won't be able to guarantee on-time delivery. Only that I will do my best.

If your order is time urgent, I would rather lose the sale than make a promise I can't keep, so there are others probably better suited to hitting your deadline, I do hope you will come back when your needs are not under deadline.

Crazing on Dinnerware Items

Do not ever buy any dinnerware items that have crazing. Anything that you might eat off of. If you see a Seller on Etsy trying to sell a plate or bowl with crazing, I would boycott this Seller as they are selling something to you that is hazardous to the health of your family.

Crazing is micro fracture cracks in the glaze caused by a temperature differential between the ceramic and the glaze or sometimes different layers in the glaze. These cracks are permeable to water and sometimes are not visible tot he naked eye until you give the item a wash. (And why you shouldn't buy dirty dinnerware!) These cracks will also harbor bacteria where they can't be washed away. Black crazing is bacteria run amuck. Gross!

Listing Photographs

I do my best to capture the detail of the items as well as any potential issues or flaws. Sometimes damage does not reveal itself except under special conditions, and should you receive such an item from me, please reach out to me so we can work on a solution together. For the most part, the item pictured is the one you will receive, with the notable, but not solely limited to, exception of dinnerware. For pieces where I have multiples available, the item photographed may not necessarily be the item(s) you receive. The item you receive will be of comparable or better condition. Items of different condition level will be called out, put into a different price tier, or separated to a different listing.
