Traveling and living in Utah influences my choices of glazes colors and clay. By making slabs and altering my thrown pieces, I can add texture, color, capture movement and add a bit of whimsy. I love handbuilding and combining techniques. Working alone in my studio is both relaxing and creative.

About

Functional Pottery with a Touch of Whisy

My first career was as a registered nurse and heath educator. While working at the Utah Department of Health, I started taking pottery classes. After several years I decided to pursue becoming a potter so I enrolled in the University of Utah Ceramics Program. After finishing my classes, I kept working to save enough to remodel my home to acommodate a studio and acquire all of the needed equipment. It took several years to accomplish my goal.

After setting up my studio and quitting my job, I became a full time potter. I love to throw on a potter's wheel but I also love to hand-build. I roll out slabs, designs patterns, cut out the clay, and combine the pieces. I also combine wheel-thrown pieces with hand-built pieces. I love texture and look for ways to add it to my pieces. The texture is created by using my hand-carved bisque stamps and pressing them into the clay. I mix and create most of my glazes.

Earlier in my life I painted oil landscapes. The love of painting has carried over into my pottery making. Many of my designs use underglazes painted on clay. I enjoy using all of these different methods in pottery making.

All of my functional pieces are dishwasher and microwave safe recognizing that they are hand made and should be treated with care.

My hands always seem to clay on them as a full time studio potter. I make and ship my pottery to gift boutiques and galleries in the US. I also show my pottery at art festivals in my region. I love to create textural pottery with a touch of whimsy.
