About

Moth Jewelry

In a cabin in Muskoka Leslie designs waxed linen jewelry inspired by her surroundings. She is a formally trained silversmith from Ontario College of Art and Design. Moth Jewelry began in 2005. At the time Leslie was creating silicone prosthetics for amputees, and as a Henna artist. It sounds a little eclectic, but in reality, it makes a lot of sense. What better understanding of the human form than by actually sculpting a hand, or a foot. Or by covering the contours with intricate henna designs. The best part about the Henna, Leslie was invited to tour with OZZY OZBOURNE as the tours official henna artists. She took a break for about a month each summer for the tour. Yep!
When the corporate job decided Leslie should give up the Henna gig, Leslie had to choose. In a few months she left her job and moved up to Muskoka. Shortly after Moth Jewelry was born. It was an easy transition, continuing to work on the human form.
It's pretty cool to be able to write about an artist went out on their own, and has been successful. Leslie is someone who did this. Why? She has a pure love of materials. At OCAD she also studied Interdisciplinary Studies, she could basically choose whatever she wanted to study. Wood working, mold making, plastics, sculpture, metal, jewelry, foundry, everything at her fingertips.
This love of material comes through with all her designs. All linked with one continual base, waxed linen. Waxed linen is amazing because its so durable, and comfortable.
'I want people to see beauty in simplicity', says the artist. She believes we should remember to appreciate the beauty in everyday things.
Now Leslie sells her work throughout the summer and ten small art boutiques carry her work.
